Re: Wisconsin Grouse Hunting
Been a tough season so far here. Lots of cover due to so much rain and warm temperatues this summer. September brought up to 10" of rain in some areas in one week so woods are very wet. Only flushed 2 Woodcock since opener, which is OK I don't shoot em anyway. Temperatures haven't help either first ...

Re: hunting the thornapple
Early in the season the problem is not finding food sources it's finding what they are eating. Because of the abundance of food grouse can be anywhere. Families will still be together so when you find one bird you may find several. Dogwood, highbush cranberry, acorns greens are all food sources grou...

Re: gave it one last try for grouse
Nice job, I hunted Sat and Sun for about 3-4 hrs each day. Saturday produced 6 flushes and no shots. Sunday had 7 flushes 1 very nice point by my GWP in a cutover missed! My EP pointed a bird but it flushed wild but I got his buddy. Miss a couple more but they were tough shots ( Grouse Shots). Had f...

Re: Hawk screamer on beeper collar
Any loud noises by a animals ears will effect their hearing. I use the hawk scream on my GWP but I put the beeper on a different collar and put it around the dogs waist near hind quarters. Works fine and keeps the loud noise away from dogs ear. Give it a try.

Non tox required when hunting Waterfowl Production Areas in Wisconsin for any birds or small game. Dove hunting on state managed land requires non tox shot. Federal Wildlife refuges require non tox for any hunting other than deer.

I hunted for about 3 hours today temps was 30 when I started at 9:00AM. When I quit at 1:00PM it was 27. Flushed 4 birds that were grouped up, my GWP Lucy pointed but the birds didn't hold flushed out of range. Suppose to be -7 Sunday and Monday will be even colder not hunting tomorrow. Tough sleddi...

Neil no offense intended, my point was you shot lots of birds and unless most of them were shot before 1985 you probably were using steel.

Re: Steel loads for grouse and woodcock
So your saying lead never crippled birds? I don't need to shoot at birds over 40 yds most of my hunting is upland and steel works just fine. Since Steel has been around 30 plus years a great many hunters have never used lead on waterfowl. Steel shotshells have come a long ways since the late 70's. I...

Re: Steel loads for grouse and woodcock
Having used steel shot in one form or another since the late 70's I disagree that steel shot cripples more game. While I still like to use lead where I can I shoot about half of my birds each year with steel. I have never patterned any of my guns or shells. I never saw the need, if I do my part the ...

Hunted today after work hunted 1.5hrs had 10 flushes. Managed to get a shot at 4 of them all misses, cover is still very thick. Dog had a couple of points but birds were jumpy. The best chance I had was a bird I flushed back past me. I had a real good look at it but I hesitated as it was so close. N...

Re: Adding a Beeper to an E-collar?
Trade your collar in for a Dogtra 2500 TB, they are very light weight and work well. I have the same setup that you have. In addition to a 2500 TB I have a Dogtra 1500 that I added a Tritronics beeper to. It is OK but you can't control the beeper off your Dogtra transmitter. I bought a Tritronics co...

Re: Browning Auto 5 Barrel Options
Try some of the gun sites for used barrels, Ebay usually has barrels though Auto 5 20 ga may be tough to find. Briley does good work but you could send your barrel in and have a poly choke installed for less money. I didn't use to think much of poly chokes till I had one put on a 870 much quicker to...

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?
For waterfowl and pheasants I use a Remington 11-87 12 ga that I bought back in the early 90"s. I also tend to use this gun for doves and crow as I tend to shoot it pretty well. For ruffed grouse I use a model 59 Winchester with a vr and the barrel cut back to 24" also in 12 ga. I'm looking hard a g...

Its been kinda goofy the last few times I have been out most of the birds flushed from trees. This time of year I try to target food sources and spots with southern exposure. Big snow storm is coming on Wednesday so the hunting will get pretty tough on us senior citizens. With the rain the last 2 da...

Re: Trying to decide
By all means if you shoot it well keep it. There are a couple of options you have, #1 Buy a extra barrel with choke tubes. The internet sites are full of extra barrels. # 2 Have a poly choke installed. I sent my 870 in and had a poly choke installed, it works just fine and I don't have to worry abou...

Re: Minnesota Grouse~ 4th hunt
Tough weekend here as well, very windy. Flushed 4 grouse Saturday killed 3 in about 2.5 hrs of hunting. Sunday for the same time only saw 1 bird no shots. I also have a TT G3 beeper and in my opinion it is the biggest piece of sh*t I have ever seen. I purchased it back in June and never took it out ...
