Re: Retrive and Backing

Breeding for strong natural retrieving overlaps all desire wants. With strong desire in all aspects of the dog it is generally easier to train the dog to higher levels. IM0 FF is just a method for molding the retrieve to your wants and expectations and to create a proper clean, finished retrieve. It...

Issac: You should check out the Pattern books by Tom Matus, Shroud, Grayson etc. Many times in used book stores you can find the pattern books. They are fairly cheap, good reference and of course you have dead ducks to look at as well. I use pine, for bodies. Used to use cedar but the dust is killer...

Just to add a little to the hunt: Carve up some of your own. They are not as easy to use or carry around but it is neat to see the ducks come into them.

My woodduck set is all hand carved and painted.

But There are many great market decoys.

When the duck is down, the dog may not mark it properly if at all. The dead ducks will look like everything else in the water. So if your dog is not trained with hand signals to get it down wind of the dead duck, carry a few rocks to toss at the duck when your dog is looking in that direction.

Well: I have enjoyed watching my Black Bart dog and old Dexter dog do this. Since those two have passed, I do not have a grouse dog that does that.
