Re: Help with teaching WHOA

Missourihunter and daniel, I prefere not to use boards or posts as it adds another transition to get away from eventually. the biggest issue in both cases is making sure that the dog completely understands the command and understands that to turn the pressure off (the collar) that it must stop movin...

Re: TRAINING TABLE QUESTION

Why use a table? since i assume that you will not be taking a table with you when you are hunting, transferring anything learned on the table to the ground is in my mind an uneccessary extra step. the only reason i can see using a table is if you have several dogs to ff and it saves on your back! te...

Re: hesitant about gun breaking any suggestions

if i were the trainer i would rather do it myself. changing how a dog is introduced to a gun mid-stream is not a good thing. either do it all the way yourself or let the trainer do it. when we do gun breaking, we are teaching so many other things at the same time while we are in the field. I much pr...

Re: Professional trainers

All good advice. unless the dog is in for one or maybe 2 specific things, we ask for 3-4 months for our gundog program. the time spent with each dog each day really depends on what is being worked on. Training for specific commands 10-30 minuts a session depending on how the session goes and 1-4 ses...

Re: gun shy

I think something specific had to have happened to cause this. it may or may ot be the shot, but definatly something in that situation has her spooked. I would certianly give her a rest from any pressure or real mechanical type training but i would continue to take her to the field and let her have ...

Re: TT Pro 200

I would go with the 100. you need more levels of continouis then momentary. after trying several collars, the tt pro 100 is what i have used for 6+ years now and would not change for anything! they get used pretty hard here.

Correction: Tell was another danish import. I would have to do some looking as to his background. he was bred with the moesgaard line here though so his blood is in with a lot of it.

Re: moesgaard's rhytym n blues ????'s

What would you like to know? we have some pretty straight line bred moesgaard dogs and i have ped information back to Moesgaards IB (1953) and Doktorgaardens Lucky (1955) that were danish field champions brought over to the us in the 50's. this was the start of the moesgaard line over here. A guy by...

take him on medium walks. maybe where he can find birds. don't wear him out to much, keep it fun and maybe work on here though not real hard unless it becomes a problem. throw the dummy for him and don't chase him with it. a good here should take care of that later. that is really all the training h...

Re: Reinforcing Whoa

Don't try this if your dog is not ready or can't handle the pressure (had to get that warning in) . it is a regular excersize for dogs that will be competed/tested or guided with on preserves to get them to the point of having a wing clipped quail walking all around them, in between their legs and r...

Re: i am in a bind and need advice on my EP

I am a little confused. are you using "here" or "come"? it does not matter which but it should be one or the other and stick with it. I do not advise EVER turning him loose without a collar unless and until you drop him in a field trial or hunt test. every time you say a command and he has the oppor...

Re: gun breaking question

start back again, 100 yds at least with a blank pistol and throw a dead bird (or a live one if the dog does not get excited about dead ones) as soon as the shot is fired. shoot then throw. as soon as the dog acknowledges the shot you want that bird to drop down right in front of it. slowly work your...

Re: Introduced my GSP to gunfire today.......next steps??

I would back off and slow down a lot. that is pretty fast advancement on the gun if you ask me. I might spend up to 2 weeks depending on the dog to condition it to the point that i actually shoot birds over it. Here is the killer thing about gunbreaking, some dogs it might never ever be an issue but...

sounds like a fun pup. teach him here so it is absolute and let him run. sounds like he is about ready for formal training! the pointing thing will come. give me a call and i will give you some thoughts on how to get him started!

Re: Transistion Between Hunting & Trials

rays thoughts are good though i use different methods. if you decide to take it to a pro the LESS you do with the dog the better. I have spent a fair amount of time on some dogs unteaching them what their owners have done in order to achieve the clients desired results. Also, if the methods that you...

everybodies advice about waiting is right. i would only be concerned with "here" right now and with a pup that young that really should not be a big issue anyway. let him run, find and chase (not catch) birds for a while and when you have trouble getting him back get more serious about your recall c...

Re: Train Help-1st exposure to planted birds revealed problems

dont just use an e-collar to "teach" him obedience. an e-collar is a wonderful tool for enfocement if done correctly but should not be used until the dog knows the commands and then just still be used correctly oryou may teach the dog things that you don't want it to know!

Re: dogs creeping need help

Here is a little different view to your situation. if these are hunting dogs, creeping itself should not be a crime. often dogs will move to continue to pinpoint a bird. going in to flush/catch the bird, this is the real issue. i agree with teaching whoa away from the birds until it is perfected but...

I know that the collar on the flank is a popular method and if it is working for you by all means keep with it. I do not use it though since i don't plan to run a dog with the collar on the flank that is one more step that the dog has to go through when you transfer to just the dollar on the neck. I...
