Re: O/U for a lanky dude...
mofro, Nothing wrong with the last few guns you mentioned, but I'm lanky too and like others in the thread I like Beretta o/u's best out of the box. One other note: If you end up getting the stock tweaked, I would not, as someone suggested, go to Cole's. I had a really bad experience with them. I ha...

Re: Feeding the Canine Athlete-----
A Purina researcher told me that hard-working dogs should be fed once a day in the evenings. Research was done mostly with sled dogs but also with hunting dogs. Dogs fed in this manner metabolize their meals during the night and are ready to go in the morning. This eliminates the torsion (stomach fl...

Re: Retriever training in the city
I received an interesting note from my apartment's management company that relates to this topic. It seems they've received complaints that a man with a brown and white dog is disobeying the city's mandatory leashing law. Dunno who that could be ... my dog's liver and white

Re: Drop ducks like rain!!! Really?
We have a marsh north of town that I have suggested they restrict ammo to 2 3/4 inch shells, steel only and no more than 20 shells on your person. I appreciate your sentiment and I think you have good intentions; however, with all the barriers to entry and often confusing regs that already exist fo...

Re: Grandfather's Browning A5
You've got yourself a classic! The Belgian A-5 was the prestige gun of its day. If you plan to shoot it, I'd have a gunsmith give it a once over to ensure it's still safe to operate.

Re: Retriever training in the city
I have an urban gundog in Arlington, VA, a mile outside D.C. I second Ezzy's advice; you'll be fine. Another tip: I get around leashing laws by leaving a long check cord on the dog when I'm doing dummy drills within the city limits. Some animal control officers can even be convinced that an e-collar...

Re: Drop ducks like rain!!! Really?
My buddy Jeff has a pretty good wrap up of the new non-toxic loads w/ density and hardness info on his blog here: http://www.americanhunter.org/BlogEntry.aspx?id=2101&cid=46 We've mostly been talking shot densities, but check out some of the shells' numbers on the Diamond Pyramid Hardness scale. I t...

Re: gun control
There's a pile of false info circulating about SB-2099 and HR 45. HR 45, although a registration scheme, does not pose an immediate threat. Many bills are introduced with full knowledge that they will not go anywhere. As of now it has only a sponsor, without any co-sponsors. It is in a committee and...

Re: Distracted by anothers whistle
As a few others said, your dog will likely get used to the other hunter's whistle and ignore it. Another thing to consider: How close is your buddy to you when he's blowing his whistle? It might be less distracting and confusing to your dog if you have your buddy hunt, say, 50 yards to your right or...

Re: Drop ducks like rain!!! Really?
Steel is still steel any way you slice it, but I like Black Cloud. The flitecontrol wad has proven itself to me in pattern-board tests and the shot performed well in gelatin. I've shot a lot of ducks with Black Cloud, usually No. 4s but also a few with the new No. 3s. Non-toxic loads and obviously l...

Re: cocker spaniel can they be good hunting dogs/ retrievers?
Itemid=58 Still, the springers tend to bring home the majority of the ribbons in head-to-head trials and have won 42 of 43 Canadian nationals. Is that because there are many more Springers entered in the field, or are cockers well represented at the nationals? That's probably the biggest reason; th...

Re: cocker spaniel can they be good hunting dogs/ retrievers?
Field bred English Cockers are as much bred for the field as Field Springers. In fact, if I'm not mistaken I've heard in Canada, their hunt tests or field trials can include both & the Cockers have recently dominated. Canadian spaniel trials do indeed pit springers vs. cockers. The cockers have bee...

Re: Browning Maxus
Ezzy: A valid point. Especially now that steel shotshells have improved as much as they have, you simply don't need 3 1/2" shells to kill decoying ducks or even geese. I think it's more important to choose an appropriate shot size and find a load that patterns well out of your gun. 3" and 2 3/4" she...

Great shotgun. No other 3 1/2-inch gun is rated for 1-ounce target loads and it's light enough for upland hunting. Here are a few of my thoughts on it if you're interested: http://www.americanhunter.org/ArticlePa ... 2026&cid=0

TriStars are made in Turkey. It's worth noting that the company is under new management and the quality of its shotguns are much improved over just a few years ago.

I hunted pheasants with the Viper earlier this month. Good gun for well under $500. I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.

Re: Advice for my next dog ?
I think we're all pretty biased toward our favorite breeds (IMO go w/ a springer!), but whatever you decide, be sure to investigate the temperament of the parents before buying a pup. I'm stuck outside D.C. in a small apartment. My springer is 50 lbs. (big for his breed) but does well indoors. I thi...

Re: late season loads/chokes
IMO switching to tighter chokes and bigger shot for the late season is overrated. Do the birds really change all that much? Personally I shoot 5s or hot 6s and choke IC/M or LM/M the entire season. A lot of it also depends on what shells your gun likes. Make sure you pattern it with different shell ...

Re: Dizzying birds
A flushing dog will always catch a pigeon or two (even wild pigeons), but she shouldn't be catching all of them. I'd try dizzying the birds less, giving them more time to recover or both. Also, consider the type of cover you're planting them in. If it's too heavy, the pigeon won't be able to burst o...

Re: cocker puppy training
FLocker, Troutbum and gonehuntin' both make very good suggestions. How far away is the dog when you're trying to get her to hup (sit)? The greater the distance, the more difficult it will be for you to stop her, b/c she is young, still learning the basics and potentially distracted. You want to star...
