Re: what info. on collar id plate

I dont know if anyone is still looking at this thread or not but if so, I would like to recommend a product its a stainless ID tag. They dont wear out like the brass rivet ones. And you can easily change them from collar to collar. Here is a link. http://www.boomerangtags.com/store/index.php?A=S&ID=22

Re: Newbie intro and looking for some opinions!

I personally like and hunt behind a deutsch drahthaar (DD) and I know that it was not on your list of three, but its orgins stem from two of the three. The DD is a combination of a stichelhaar, pudelpointer, griffon, and the deutsch-kurzhaar (GSP). Most DD's would fair just fine with your german she...

Re: What does this say about breeder?

My girlfriend told me she just doesnt like the look of the "red rocket" on male dogs and that I should get a female. I was indifferent so I got a female. One more thing to think about.

Thanks again for all the responses. I think that I will go with what everyone wrote and hold off on any formal training sessions for now and wait until she is a little bit older.

Re: Force fetch ear pinch...

I got her in the fall, so she was 2 months when I got her and she is now 5.5 months. She came from Jill Manrings kennel Wildflugel and Jill has been a great resource of information for me and is alway helpful on the phone. She suggested that I wait as well, she is really solid on sit, stay, and come...

Re: Force fetch ear pinch...

Thanks for all the great help. I just tried pinching the out side of the ear between my thunb no nail and the collar. She has lost all of her baby teeth and all of her adult teeth have broke skin. She seems very stable mentally even when I was trying to work with her yesterday and takes very well to...

Force fetch ear pinch...

I just started using an ear pinch while force fetching my DD. For about the past week I have just been placing a dummy in her mouth and holding it there to get her used to mouthing it and today I brought in the ear pinch and tried to place it in her mouth. The end result was her biting together so I...

My female DD is right around 45 lbs and she is only 5.5 months. I think that I might have a big girl. She is out of NE and now lives in MN.

Re: Non-toxic shot

If you know someone that loads their own you can have them make you some special shot... Put a straw down the middle of your shell fill the middle with lead and just use steel on the out side. That way if you get checked you will pass the maginet test and still have awesome knock down power. Lead is...

Re: Deutsch Drahthaar can anyone tell me about them

Would you guys and gals consider the GWP an aggressive dog? Or as aggressive as a DD? They all came from the same lines, the two just split in the 1950's and people still today are taking DD's and registering them as GWP's in the AKC system to strengthen their lines. Most DD breeders will not breed ...

Re: Deutsch Drahthaar can anyone tell me about them

Its the only kind of hunting dog I will own. Mine is a house dog and is very mellow in the house and does very well in the field. Its just like any other dog though you have to find a breeder that is on the same page as you are about what you are looking for in traits. They are the true versitle dog...

The switch from puppy food to adult formula?

I was wondering when most people switch from puppy to adult formula. I feed purina pro plan puppy right now (17 week old dog) and was wondering when to switch to the adult food. I looked at the back of both bags and they seem to be very close in content and nutrition but puppy food is about $24 for ...

Re: GWP's?

One thing about GWP is there coats come in a many lengths and hardnesses. It is a very young breed so there are some dogs with genetic throwbacks that will have short 3/4" coats that would do fine in TX while others may have a coat more like a griffont that could be 3" or longer. The mother of my fe...

When did your dogs grow there beards? I bought a dd about 9 weeks ago now and she is 17 weeks old and no signs of a beard yet. My brother bought a dog out of the same litter and his is already getting his beard. I think that I might end up with a slick faced wirehair. Her wire coat is strarting to c...

I really like ND better there seems to be a lot more public land as previously posted. If money is not a too big of deal I would hunt SD because you can get on privite land with more birds then you have ever seen. The first time I was in SD about 100 birds or so flushed up in front of me and didnt e...

If you just take a wire brush like a women's hair brush type they come out very easily in a wire coat. That is one of the great things of a wire coat burrs can be brushed out without much work.

Re: choosing a breed. guard, point, track, pull

This is all fause because a Weim is a Weim it doesn't matter where it came from, they all at one time came from the same breeding stock so the DNA is the same and they will all hunt the same. So a Weim from Germany is the same as a Weim from the US (DNA is the same). So why would you spend the extra...

Re: choosing a breed. guard, point, track, pull

The DD does do this all the time they just dont do it over night. When your dog is tested if it fails to be approved to be breeding stock it is no longer a part of the over all breed. It just dosent happen over night you have to weight for the dog to die, but that dog couldn't ever produce offspring...

That is weird because my brother picked up a Browning SX3 last year and it was made in Belgium not Japan. I thought that the best guns were made in Belgium. But what do I know I shoot and 870 and smoke him with his SX3. and Winchester is part of the Browning group I think. I saw some nice Remington ...

Re: choosing a breed. guard, point, track, pull

Blood line registration thing. The AKC will recognize foreign registries as pure breads in the US, but the VDD will not. All DD's are registered in Germany through the VDD and each dogs ear is tattooed with the German registration number before they leave the kennel. All of this is done so we as hun...

Wow, a little harsh and I feel un-true. If you do a little more research you will learn that a DD (german wirehair) was created from a stichelhaar, pudelpointer, griffon, and Deutsch kurzhaar. Years ago people brought these dogs to the USA and the AKC recognized them as a GWP in the 1950's. The DD f...

Re: choosing a breed. guard, point, track, pull

The DD and the American GWHP are not the same dog, that is one thing to remember a few people have suggested buying an GWHP because they maybe cheaper but if you look on the VDD webpage there are many breaders of DD's and a lot that sell dogs for $600 or even less sometimes. One thing to consider ab...
