I feed proplan and they seem to do well on it. Of coarse I have no proof its the dog food that makes them look and perform well.

Down here in Texas a major concern is your dog running their livestock. Be prepared to address that.

Re: Steadiness, range and confidence?
That is so true. You have to constantly keep your eye on green broke dogs. Dont let them out of your sight. So if she is working close even better. No worries. She will be back in time. Just keep her broke.

Re: Steadiness, range and confidence?
I agree. Dont go backward. That is completely normal for them to creep and be real cautious during breaking. Use this to your advantage. I learned this from another pro. Treat your training session just like a "call back". That is, I have the same routine In training as I would before a call back. I...

Re: Whoa! on wild birds
From what you described as the pup getting birdy,it sounds like he is catching scent and then following it up and getting too close before deciding to point.I would work the dog on pen raised birds where you know where the bird is and can control the situation.Work your dog back and forth across th...

I know a guy that was hunting with his dogs and camping in a tent. At night one of the dogs kept barking so he lit him up with the collar. The only problem was the collar was on the wrong dog.

Re: How far have you got a signal with your Garmin
The Astro is absolutely worth the hype. And the price. If you don't think so, just go around to the different forums and read the posts on lost dogs. IMO, the Astro ain't truly useful for finding really lost dogs - it doesn't have the range or the battery life. When the sun sets and you still don't...

Re: Whoa! on wild birds
Right on Boxa. More wild birds and dont give a cammand you cant enforce including "whoa". "Whoa" has nothing to do with birds. It is a cammand like any other. Sounds like your pup has just had too many pen raised birds and has learned he can get close. I have similiar problem with one of my dogs and...

Please elaborate. He gets birdy before he points and then establishes a point and the bird gets up on its own or your dog gets birdy then knocks the bird before pointing it. Re: Whoa! on wild birds
So lets just get this straight so we understand. Your hunting your dog on wild birds. He goes on point. Then he breaks point and flushes them before you get there?
Have you trained the dog to know what "Whoa" means? Are you telling the dog "whoa" and he is ignoring you?

It is about time. The more time you spend with your dog the better. I dont know how you can spend the same amount of time with a dog that stays in the kennel as one that lives with you. I have done both and this difference is night and day. Not only is the interection important but also time spent t...

Re: dog snipped at son
I think there is definitely a balance to be struck here. The dog that nipped believes he is just above that child in the pecking order. We are talking dogs and we bring them into our lives with a certain risk. Dogs have a way of communicating. Mama dog growls and nips at her own pups if she needs to...

make sure you have plenty of good bedding in the kennel. Dogs consume calories when cold and especially if they shiver. You might want to add canola or olive oil to the food.

A pup needs to be a Pup. Your methods may have worked for now, but you could be losing out on enjoying their "puppy-hood" with them with early "training". Yes incorperating words with what you make them do can be effective, but not always, you could see cooperation as a pup that young come back to ...

Re: Looking for tips from the whoa masters
I disagree that its to soon to teach whoa. Its not rocket science. A bird dog only needs a few commands. "Here, Whoa, Kennel and his/her name. Puppy training should be fun and enjoyable for both you and your pup. There is no reason not to use all these cammands everyday with your pup. However, one s...
