Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

Yes people need to use their brain and not use a pellet gun. The report of the bb gun sounds nothing like my 12 gauge. The dog isn't gunshy a bit he loves guns. A lot more dogs have been ruined by ecollars than bb guns I agree. And finally I did answer a question asked and did not say this was the b...

Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

Have someone shoot you on the rear with a Red Ryder BB gun from 20 yards away. Then go put your dog' shock collar around your neck and shock yourself. You will see pretty quick which one is really worse. The problem is the dog thought he didn't have to listen to me if he was far enough away from me....

Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

Yes. You might want to reread the post above. I only have 1 pigeon now and the rest are chickens. The pigeon even thinks he is a chicken now. So I do not want my dog to kill my chickens. I have been shot with a bb gun many times before as a kid and without the benefit of a dog's fur coat or a dog's ...

Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

My sons red Ryder bb gun and pop him in the rump as he is charging them to kill them. Unlike when I used a shock collar he has no idea when I might open the back sliding door and reach out and touch him. He doesn't charge them now he just sits and stares at them licking his chops. I don't punish him...

Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

Well I put lattice all around the base of the coop, but he kept digging under it. When I would let the pigeons out to fly he would try to catch them. Now out of the original 10 only one smart pigeon remains. A storm ripped the coop out of the ground so the pigeon lives with my chickens now. I have s...

Re: Started bird work today

Part of the reason I carded them was because I wasn't sure if they'd fly the three miles back to my house. I can see how having a launcher would come in very nicely but you work with what you can. Maybe grant will have another promotion drawing (hint hint :D )

Started bird work today

I loaded up the SUV with my father, son, dog (11 mo GSP), and 3 pigeons and went to a local park. The park had a big section of high grass so while my father and son kept the dog busy elsewhere, I carded the three pigeons and let them fly out into the high grass. I had them out and the wind was blow...

Re: should I be worried at all?

Thanks again for all of the replies. I would call you saltriver, but normally the only time I have to myself is late at night since I work a late shift, you'd probably hang up on me if I was bold enough to call :) I took him out again this morning. I busted a covey of quail, the dog pointed box turt...

Re: should I be worried at all?

I hope you guys are right. We got him from a shelter as a pup. They said he was part lab and part GSP, but as he has gotten rid of his puppy fat, there isn't one thing about him that isn't GSP except for his mainly black coat. But I have seen lots of pictures of black GSPs. He was from an area where...

Re: should I be worried at all?

No I haven't put him on pigeons yet. I have some that are in the coop trying to forget how to get to their previous home right now :) I think you are right Brenda, when I tried the wing and rod with him he was just chasing the wing and it was all I could do to keep it out of his mouth. so do I just ...

should I be worried at all?

Took my 10 month GSP pup dove hunting with me today at the closest Wildlife management area. It was his second time ever going "hunting." Same old story, I shot at a lot of doves, only hit 3  wished I had the full choke with me. But that isn't what I am asking about. It is important to know th...

First true hunt with the new pup today

I live in SW Missouri and took my dad and my 10 month old GSP pup out for opening day of dove season on a public conservation area today. I had a blast as did my partners and were it not for the dog I would not have gotten squat. While walking through a sunflower field to try to jump some doves me o...

Re: gsp retrieveing

I took my dog out to a gun range today and there were a couple of fellows dialing in their .22's. Didn't bother my dog (10 months old) a bit. Then some other guys started shooting some semi-auto pistols much larger caliber and much much louder and although you could tell he was surprised, he was pul...

Re: gsp retrieveing

I don't see why it would not work. A lot of GSP's are natural retrievers, mine is semi-natural meaning if there is food involved he is more likely to do what I want him to. Mine is still just a pup but I am planning on using him next dove season if not towards the end of this one.

Re: just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

I woke up this morning to find that he had dug almost all the way under the latice I put up yesterday and there were big muddy paw prints on all four sides of the coop as high as he could reach. I am glad he is interested in birds but for those of you who have pigeon coops and don't keep your dogs k...

just got my new pigeons in the new pigeon coop...

and my 10 month old pup is going crazy! Sitting underneath barking non-stop, standing up on his hind two legs sniffing through the cracks in the wood in the coop and jumping up underneath and banging his head in the wire beneath the coop. The birds are pretty smart- they are trying to hide fom him. ...

Pigeon coop feature

I have purposely limited the amount of my pigeon coop that you guys could see because it is just too darn embarrassing. I am no carpenter  I did come up with a pretty neat idea though that I wanted to share with you guys. I bought a little rabbit hutch from a feed store and put it together. I t...

Carded pigeon question

I haven't started pigeon training my dog yet, but hope to start in the next month. with carded pigeons (assuming they are homers) what happens after the dog chases them. do you have to catch them in the field and remove the card to let them fly home? or do they tote the card all the way back with th...

Re: Hello from the Ozarks

Thanks guys for the welcome and for the compliment. Between the J.O.B., flyfishing, getting my Masters in teaching, being a husband, father, and now dog training, I don't have as much time for my art as I would like. At least I don't have a chance to get bored though.

Hello from the Ozarks

Hello everybody. I have been following this website for a month or so now and have found it to be full of great info. I am in the process of training my dog. I got my dog from a pound as a 4 month old pup. They told me it was part GSP and part black lab. They probably told me this because it was mai...
