Put up 25 plus phez

Took the dogs my 3 yr old male and 5 mo old pup to my gun club today. No hunting on Sundays in PA but they had a big continental hunt on Sat and must have had some poor shooters. Had a bunch of solid points and a lot of wild flushes. Must have put up 25 or more birds in about two hours. Closest thin...

Re: dog door

Karen,

Do you use this door in a kennel or do you have one in a door in your house. I have three in my house but they are the pvc flap type. Flaps keep ripping. I need one on my garage door. Would this be good for this application?

Re: Pre Fab Kennel

My males can tear up a chain link kennel in a very short time if a female in season is near. I use the heavy duty welded steel kennels. The building is big is it divided and the access blocked someway inside. One draw back is teh chain link is not heavy duty. Do not think I will have problems with ...

Pre Fab Kennel

I have been looking at a pre fab kennel that the amish builders in PA make. The kind that can be seen at places like Pine Creek Structures, Fisher Structures and the other pre made storage shed builders. The kennel is basically an insulated shed, with two divided sleeping areas inside. The outside h...

Re: Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

A pretty common recommendation is to send the dog to a pro for breaking (or polishing up) at about 1 1/2 years old and after it has had at least one full hunting season but before it has been allowed to develop any ingrained poor habits. Mark, I think that is only true for field trial dogs if you a...

Re: Flushing Birds Help

if they are flushing dogs you could try carding the birds. Tie a looped piece of yarn to the leg above the joint and attach a piece of cardboard about 6inches square. You can throw the birds into light cover and when flushed they will fly off for a short distance and you can gather them up to use ag...

Re: Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

I do have access to birds for training. I have homers and a recall pen for quail. I do a lot of training on my own and about once a week with my mentor. I belong to a pheasant preserve and hunt grouse at my camp in PA. I know you guys don't think much of preserves, but I am also able to run the dogs...

Re: Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

I know what you are saying. I am fortunate to have a mentor who helps me train and bum around with at the trials. He was very succesful in the 90's and early 2000 but ran into some health issues. He is back at it again and beginning to have some success. I still make some rookie mistakes, but feel l...

Re: Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

I am mainly looking to run her myself at the weekend trials. I know Pete does not campaign dogs any longer, but a few of the folks I know that have had dogs trained by him were able to put an AFC or FC title on their dogs in this method. I need to figure out my priorities. I am still first and forem...

Re: DOG LETS DOWN ON POINT WHEN APPROACHED

Update Picked up at 28 min. My boy gave a pretty nice forward race and ran as good or better than the EP he was braced with. At 28 nearing the clubhouse he had a nice solid point. I flushed a poor flying bird directly at him. He took a few steps and was ordered up. His bracemate failed to back and w...

Re: Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

Pete is exactly who I had in mind. He trains at Water & Wings which is where I picked my pup up. Got her form Jim Wilkinson who is the caretaker there. I will give Pete a call to see what he thinks is a good time. Just wanted to get an idea of what age is appropriate.

Re: Getting Frustrated Please Help

Hate to say it, but it does not sound like a crate training issue to me. Sounds like territorial marking. Tough problem to solve. I had one male that started the habit at about 2.5 yrs. He was really sneaky about it like it sounds yours was. I really don't have any advice for you except try to catch...

Pro Trainer for Field Trial Prospect

At what age do those of you who use a pro trainer send your dog? I am particularly interested in dogs that will be training for field trials. I have a 4month old pup from a great competition breeding. I have hopes of her becoming my FT dog.

Re: DOG LETS DOWN ON POINT WHEN APPROACHED

I do set him back when he moves. I have killed a couple of pigeons for him since my first post and the intensity is back in his point. I think it may have just been anticipation of a correction and the recognition of the pigeons and boredom with them. I thought I would have a big problem after he ca...

Re: DOG LETS DOWN ON POINT WHEN APPROACHED

Got some kill birds at auction last night and killed one after a solid point. Moved a little on the flush, set him back and he retreived to hand. Today I tried to mix it up. Planted a homer and a kill bird. Great staunch point, twice after I missed the bird and relocated him. Second bird (homer) goo...

Re: DOG LETS DOWN ON POINT WHEN APPROACHED

Thanks for all the replies. Good ideas given. I can work on a lot of the ideas in the short term. I need to get some kill birds for him. I can tell he gets a little bored with the homers I train with, but don't want to kill any of them. I kow he will get out of it, hunting season is coming up. Hopef...

DOG LETS DOWN ON POINT WHEN APPROACHED

Looking for suggestions on how to remedy this problem. Dog is a 3yr old brittany male. He points staunchly until approached. I am sure this is a result of me coming down on him too hard during training. This is on training pigeons. Not quite sure what his reaction to gamebirds will be this season. I...
