DJ, I have to second what GP said about where for grouse & snow depths. I am in Silver Bay & inland here the snow is 18" & more depending where. Birds are very tough to locate now. The Natl. Weather Service has an "Observed Precip" page which has a link to another page called "Snow Depths". On there...

Labman,
Is your 12 ga equipped with choke tubes?
An open choke is good for grouse especially so as not to have them shot up badly.

About 4 yrs. ago I bought an Uplander 12 ga. I cut the pistol grip off, pounded it to an English Grip. This was an experiment as my first sxs. I prefer an English straight grip for ergonomic reasons for my wrist. I actually hit with it pretty well for an experimental piece. I have purchased several ...

Normally a dog is not gunshy unless MADE that way.
Your pup will need exposure to gunfire first if it has not already been done.
The methodology is available through many sources.

Took the Breton named CHASE out for a couple hour hunt yesterday. Chase normally is not a very good retriever on Ruffed Grouse. There is no reason for there to be any argument? Discussion is about exchanging ideas. Debating merits of something is a good thing. Field Bred....Field Bred English Cockers are a decent & hard working happy go lucky hunting dog of the flusher type.
A King Charles Spaniel unless aa RARE exception is nothing but a pleasant lap dog. That is what they were bred for.
Second the field bred Springer also.

Harvest was not going at all. Too wet. May be going now. Most beans were still in
and nearly all the corn was still standing when we left Nov. 2nd.
if it's been dry I would guess that they ARE making some progress out there.
