Re: Is my dog a dud.. or just a different style?
Dog looks too concerned about silly stuff - you, the birdbag, etc. Could be because the dog doesn't 'have it', or because of training errors. No way for me to figure out which one.
Either way, as Sharon said - no guns, more birds. The dog needs to be more excited about the job.

Columbia use to make some upland briar pants that were great - thick cotton, tough nylon facing. I have 3-4 pairs that have lasted very well. I don't think it is to much. But 30 birds isn't a lot for a puppy 9 months old which isn't enough to call her a started bird dog in my opinion. I think it boils down to pedigree? I tend to agree. 9 months old and having chased 30 birds and retrieved a few really isn't started. Personally, I'd rathe...

Vizslas are Hungarian, never heard of them being considered german dogs.
The breed has almost been wiped out more than once, and was rebuilt with the use of other breeds. I had always assumed pointers were used, but it might've been GSP's as well.

I never understood the "a retrieve just needs FF training, so it doesn't matter" perspective. Being steady to wing and shot is also all training. If the dog's ability to be trained and to cooperate is unimportant, why bother with broke dog stakes at all. That said, nearly every trial I've ever been ...

When we're not home they're locked up, so that's not the issue. We have a 1 acre backyard that they do get access to when we're home, though. We don't throw them out there and ignore them all night, but we can't follow them around the entire time either, and it doesn't take long to hop a fence.

I think it all depends. If you drive your dog to the field in a smoke-filled car, it stands to reason that his ability to smell may indeed be impaired in the short term. Unless you make a habit of always driving the dog around in a smoke-filled car, then I would not be concerned about long-term dama...

A vizsla we bred didn't get a great deal of bird exposure as a puppy. Some, but not a lot, it's owners were more interested in the show ring. Actually, the gunner can't assist the handler in flushing the bird and isn't supposed to tell them where the bird is located. Once the dog is on point and the gunner sees the bird, he is allowed to point it out to the handler. Straight from the rulebook. In practice, it is very commonplace for the g...
