Re: 5'7" of rattler
We're control burning right now and have been seeing at least one bad boy everyday. Several times this year we've had cotton mouths come right up to us, twice in the middle of harrowed field with the tractor idling. Nothing will make a grown man look like a little girl quite like a cotton mouth snee...

Re: Quartering questions
The best way Ive found to teach a dog to pace himself is making him stay down, even when he's so tired he's walking. It doesn't take long for them to realize they need to adapt to your pace instead of doing what they want. As long as you keep a lot of water in and on him he will be fine, it should o...

Anyday my friend, the EP is king on the southern wild bird plantations, no ifs ands or buts. It will out run, out class, and out find any other breed time, and time again down here in the Deep South on wild birds. A better move than hiding behind a tree is to make a drastic change in direction. Give him a shout with whatever call you use, I use hup, and then turn roughly 90 degrees. If he doesn't follow immediatley just keep going and singing to him (not a command), let him learn that you're not going after h...

In the end the only thing you can do is go back to yard work. He's telling you that you havn't completed his training there, it doesn't hurt to overlay the collar even at an early age (still a little too early). How long are you running him for? Yes you are correct. The drill I am speaking of is a baby step "toss the dummy a few feet" "put some feathers on it". The point of the drill is to get a good rep from a dog that should naturally be able, and willing to do the drill. The dog needs to see again that retrieving is fun, and he needs con...

I wouldn't put the pressure of FF on him until you build some fire in him. The cc isn't the fun part, it's the don't keep letting the pup make mistakes part. Put some wings on the dummy and tease him with it then toss it a few feet, let him come back on his own, if he will, then praise the heck out...

It's never too late, just turn him loose and let him run into a few. You should be taking him for walks and lettin him learn to stay to the front and use the wind as often as possible anyways. Having a few birds to put out is good, it makes it easier because you know where they are.

Sounds like he's bored, and maybe you over corrected him for running away with it. Remember that raining is suppose to be fun, and positive. Put a cc on him until he's retrieving to hand again, you cannot allow bad reps to happen if at all possible. Lay him up for a few days and he'll probably start...

I would suggest getting him in a training class with a legitimate trainer, he needs confidence building around other dogs. Or just get a submissive female and know that you can never turn your boy loose in a dogpark, they're dirty anyways. He should be okay with another male when he's hunting.

A good drill to throw in there for steadiness is to mimic a lay bird. Just make your dog stand there for a few seconds after the first bird leaves, then flush another. This teaches the dog to remain forcused instead of following the bird. Keeping the dog's focus off the bird in the air lessens the p...
