Re: FC Windyhills Prince James as a Producer.
I have to agree with Hotpepper regarding the nose. The dog in my Avatar has Windyhills Prince James in his fourth generation. His grandmother, on top, is FC Sundance Gypsy Lee (HOF) who is a grandaughter of Prince James. The dog had a huge nose and has passed it on to his offspring. The dog in my si...

David, Doesn't this post answer your own question? Wyndancer concerning all-age dogs in a breeding program I feel pretty good that the right one can really enhance a breeding program. I was just curious if other breeders had the same thoughts and am still interested if breeders had some breeding se...

Re: Which pup would you choose?
I think if the pups are that young I think your best option is #3, If you don't know the parents or any dogs in the pedigree then picking a good pup as a future competitor and breeding is based entirely on luck. There is too little you can tell about a pup at that age IMO and I've looked at a fair a...

I would want to see what you want in a dog in the parents. Probably more importantly I'd want to see that they have produced the type of dog I'm looking for. At the breeder it would be great if you could see some of the dogs that the parents have produced. Most breeders should be happy to give you t...

I'm still curious what makes you think one of the pups is better than the other and what age are they? Comparing two experienced 2 year olds and their pedigrees is totally different than comparing two 8 week olds and their pedigrees.

I would have to agree with the posts above regarding what are you judging. What age pup are you talking about? What is so outstanding with the pup you like because if it is young you are only seeing a fraction of the picture. Performance is related to conformation but also very much has to do with h...

IMO " to much pressure" is using an e-collar on a gsp that age unless you needed it to teach the pup to come to keep it out of a road that was going to get it killed. Just my opinion.

JKP I wasn't asking if breeders/hunters/trialers wanted to own an all-age dog I asked about using one, a good one as Windancer has described, in a breeding program. Also anyone have an opinion about having all-age dogs in a breeding. Good point Doug. I could see that. I also wonder how many late maturing dogs that could have been great are passed on by folks/trainers that don't have the patience or luxury of waiting on them. It's hard to dis-agree with Neil but few have the luxury. Sounds like he is doing great. I'd keep him on the wild birds if possible and away for seeing running planted birds especially if they don't fly well. He may chase the wild birds when they flush when he gets more confident and/or excited but it's not too big a deal on good flying wild birds.

I have to agree with Sharon, the more wild or wild flying birds you can put your dog on the better. Having to find wild birds in their own habitat is even better. I'm not sure if anyone answered this but www.gundogsonline.com is a good site which draws hunters and trialers. I find most of my puppy buyers want females because, as said before, they perceive them as being easier to get along with. It isn't the case at all with my dogs. I would agree with everything Ted said. He's a puppy, let him be one. No need to rush here. Be consistent with the commands you give him at this point ( his name, here etc.) and he'll probably learn them without a formal training session. Sounds like he is doing great.

I have to totally agree with Zephr. Here's why I think to say a pup over $500 is insane just doesn't fly. To simplify that argument, say you wanted a race horse and you were buying a colt. The colt out of parents with no race horses in the pedigree is $500. The colt out of the parents with a couple ...
