Re: Is It Time to Give Up?

You've got to set her up. When we train, we set up the dogs to fail....so you we correct them. Are you running in a brace when you train? If your dog is steady to wing & shot, brace with a dog that isn't. Let the other dog find the birds & bring your's in for a back. The first couple of times give h...

Eric, Welcome. You live in a great state for upland hunting with over 3 million acres of public land available. I've been hunting Michigan for the past 20 years, driving up from Ohio along with half of our state's bird hunters. You'll see more Ohio plates than Michigan plates in the fall. If you get...

You can take two 5 day hunts at the end of each hunt you can have 15 birds in possession when you leave SD. As far as ethics go, they are a personal thing and what you call ethical may not be the same as mine. Just because it is legal does not mean it is ethical. To a lot of people ethics depend on...

Re: Whats going on in Oregon Trials and Tests?

It would be fairly likely to pass. The gun lobbys don't care about hunters and the population is going more toward neutral on hunting. It is relatively easy for anti hunters to get the neutrals on their side. It would seem like it would be hard to pass in a state like Oregon. We give the anti hunte...

Ohiogps hit it on the head with pigeons & pop boxes. As soon as the dog hits scent, pop the bird. The bird teaches the dog to stop, not your command, collar, or check cord. My 1.5 year old dog had over 300 pigeons popped over her before I started shooting any for her.

Good advise by Shags to contact the trainer first. How soft is your dog? Have you tried hooking a check cord on the dog while it is on point? Hook it up, give it 5 or 10' of slack and get ready for a jolt when it hits the end. The more slack you give it, the more the jolt. Some dogs need to be flipp...
