Re: Your expectations of a Started Dog
You sound like you expect everything except for steady to WSF. IMO, that would be more than a started dog. In my mind, a started dog is one that has been exposed to game, has developed a search, will respond to the whistle, and will point birds such that they can be shot. As far as sit, down, stay, ...

Now to the question of are there birds still there and what does it take to find them? Any hunter worth his salt KNOWS where birds will be found. You don't need a dog a mile in front of the gun. The only drawback of my Stormy is his color, very hard to see in low light and at a distance. I'm not so sure that being able to see him is by product of his color or if I haver looked for a dog of my own before that wasn't vastly white. Lay the the blame where it belongs - on the breed parent clubs. Not on a registry. This discussion seems to miss an important point. To make good hunting dogs, you need gene pool....to get genepool, you need a good group of folks that share priorities. Pheasant dogs are made...not born. Teach whoa, easy on, and shoot when the dog hasn't made a mistake. Other than that, it takes wild birds to teach the dog.

It is the parent club of any breed that petitions for registry. It is the parent club that decides upon a breed standard.
