Re: Barking Pup
Well, I picked up the no-bark collar tonight and set it to level 6 of 8. I left him in the yard by himself and what do you know, he barked twice and then just stopped. A little while later, same thing. A little while later, only 1 bark. This whole process has been about 1 and 1/2 hours! I'm amazed.

Nevermind...I figured it out
Re: Heeling
I've also read that stepping on a foot is sign of saying "I'm the boss." Where does one get a heeling stick...acutually, what IS a heeling stick?

Re: Barking Pup
I don't think the figure 8 will work for me because he only barks when I'm not there. I'm picking up a bark collar today from a guy that I found on craigslist. He used it on his German Shepard mix and only used it for 3 weeks he said and no longer has to use it. Fingers crossed! Hope and a prayer.

Re: Barking Pup
The tricky thing is, I would like him to bark to alert me to something/someone in the yard or coming to the yard (a few barks then stop.) I have a 10 month old daughter that will be out in the yard in the years to come and not always with me or my wife. Is there any way to do this or do I just cut m...

Re: Attempting to train a Jack Russell mix to retrieve
There are a ton of threads on here to address the issue of gun shyness and by no means am I an expert but you will have to associate a gunshot (from a cap gun or something similar) with something fun like chasing a tennis ball just to get him used to the sound. From there you can up it to something ...

BREAKTHROUGH!!
As this is my first time training a dog, I get very excited about the small things and I just wanted to share. I have been desperately trying to get Remington, my 5-year old GSP, to heel nicely and walk next to me on a leash and not out in front. He didn't really pull, but thought he was in command....

Re: Good training book?
Ok, just read the first 15 pages of Delmar's book and like it already. Talks about how to pick a pup and he is a straight shooter.

Re: Good training book?
best way to train your gun dog by delmar smith... available at amazon This book was published in 1977. I don't want to offend anyone and I haven't looked at the book at all nor have I tried to train a gun dog...yet, but is this book the best. Have training methods really not changed that much since...

Re: Barking Pup
I actually thought of that but didn't know if I'd have the consistency that way or not. I guess if that doesn't work, I can always look into a bark collar.

Re: Barking 5 yr old
I have a similar problem with a 5 year old GSP. He barks non-stop on the one side of the yard where there is another dog living in the house. That dog is not out much but I don't want to be THAT neighbor with an incessantly barking dog so he is not outside much without me. I am at my wits end. I tri...

Re: E-collar Fear
Well, I had some success today. I have had the collar in his crate with him for the past 2.5 days. I put it on him this afternoon to throw some ball and it took a little bit but he finally got the idea that the collar is not going to hurt him. He chased the ball around for a good 20 min. before I st...

Re: E-collar Fear
The collar is going to be used so that I don't have to start calling him in the woods and scare off/spook any birds. It will be used for checking in. That would be the way to make him spooky of the collar again. You have to make that dog understand the collar is his friend. Every time you take that...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will be taking this slowly with the introduction to MY collar (assuming that there was another ecollar involved.)

E-collar Fear
I am new here so please bear with me if this topic has been covered a million times before. I just picked up a 5-year old male GSP from a breeder. This dog was returned to the breeder from the original owners because of a surprise baby and less time to give to the dog. He obeys pretty well. Knows "s...
