Re: Mine Too
I'm a novice trainer and I'm sure this problem can be traced back to something I did wrong. Was at the Oregon Waterfowl Festival. Met a nice couple with a very calm GSP. They tried hunting it in the blind... but the dog whines :D So now they only use it for jump shooting. I think this is more the n...

Syracuse Arms Company Dbl Brl cir. 1900
My brother in law has a 12 gauge "Syracuse Arms" "New Twist" Grade O #13693. Anyone know much about this gun or where he might sell it or trade it? He wants to get a 12 G. semi. I believe the gun it was manufactured around cir 1900. Looks all original. Stock about 65% Barrels are good shape and no p...

Update: Patterned Yesterday
I patterned the 3" #2 Kent Fast Steel 20 g. with a modified choke on my SKB XL Semi. Wow! I was surprised. I first shot at 30 yds and the at 20 yds. I got a very even spread with holes all over my target. The 30 yd. shot was a perfect pattern and the 20 yd pattern even distribution with most of the ...

Re: #2, 3" 20 gauge Steel
I would also be interested in what kind of patterns you are throwing with the loads you tried. Yes... very good thoughts. You're right... the ultimate answer is to fork out the $ for the heavy shot :D I'll take your advise and pattern the gun using steel shot. I'm using a mod. choke. I know mod. is...

Re: #2, 3" 20 gauge Steel
Thanks,
Those are the loads I bought. Am I right in thinking that the pattern will not change from shooting #4 steel... just the density of pellets?
I'm heading out to a preserve next week for some preseason hunting.

Re: GSP
We have two GSPs and want to introduce the two year old to duck hunting. She has a bigger body and more body fat than my older GSP. We only plan on doing a little bit of duck hunting from a blind... we may do some hunting in the field with a Mojo. So we do not plan to force fetch the dog. I introduc...

#2, 3" 20 gauge Steel
Anyone have experience shooting #2 steel on pheasants? While hunting on state land, we are required to use steel. Last year I was using #4, 3" shells and had several obvious hits and the birds did not go down. I've had good experience using #4 lead on wild birds (So I don't think it's all related to...

Re: Lewis Boots
Thanks for the link! I've purchased from Lion Country and saw those boots.Check these out they out last any other boots I have found yet.
What kind of dog do you hunt with? I have German Shorthairs. I thought those boots would be cumbersome and SLOW her down. What has been your experience?

Re: Strategies for Hunting Pheasant
Late season wild Pheasant is a real challenge! My son and I hunt together. We'll go in one end of the field and see the birds fly out the other end. We hunt with GSPs and here is what I have noticed the last 7 seasons: - Expect to see a lot of spooked birds flying out ahead of you. My 17 yr. old was...

Use Baby Socks and Duck Tape?
I expect to get some sarcasim on this post. So fire away :D But.... does anyone use baby socks and duck tape for dog boots? A long time ago I read a post where someone used this. They claimed that this technique kept dirt and small rocks from getting into the boots. My dog came down with sore feet l...

Sore feet
I'm on vacation and took my GSPs out for the first hunt today. We city folks and only occassionally get to hunt. Emma (6) and Molly (2). Molly never gets sore feet but Emma does get sore feet. Usually Emma will hunt a couple days before she gets sore feet. Anyway, Emma came down with sore feet. She ...

Re: Ideal 3" 20 g. Steel load?
My son used the same load you're using with good luck. Wouldn't hurt to try #2's but you're really starting to limit the amount of shot you're putting out there. Please let us know what you liked best. One day last Dec. I used the #2 to jump shooting Ducks and quickly brought down a Mallard Drake a...

Ideal 3" 20 g. Steel load?
In certain areas I am required to use non-toxic. When using steel in my 20 g., what 3" load do you feel is ideal for pheasant. I'm currently using 3" #4 Kent Fast Steel with a modified choke. I'm considering bumping up to #2 because I hit a few birds (could see the impact and feathers fly) and did n...

Cool vid and a beautiful Brit! What system of FF did you use?Give FF a try. I swore not to use an E collar or FF my pup but as time went on it became obvious both would be necessary. This last summer I FFd my little FB (she was 2) in the house while the kids were taking naps

As far as hunting my wife didnt wanna "hunt" but enjoed going to watch the dog work, I got her to go the first time by asking her to be my photagrapher. Now she cant wait to hunt[/quote Katie likes taking photos. That's a great idea! start her out with a small gauge or caliber gun. .22 pistol on a ...

Re: Looking for NON-forced fetch tips
IMO I think your 17 yr. old can get the FF done if he is level headed . This will be a learning experiance for him and will learn from mistakes made. We've all made them along the way. Good Luck. Thanks for the encouragement with the 17 yr old. And thanks anyway for the discouragement with the 12 y...

Young Female Who Won't Hunt
Ummm... I'm speaking of my 12 year old daughter; rather than my young female GSP . Her name is Katie and she is the last child. She claims to be gun shy and doesn't want to go hunt :) None of my other daughters woudl hunt either. Have any of you had any experience in how to convince your daughters t...

Re: 17 year old
LOL! Many of you are not afraid to speak your mind. Now I'm confused. WHY would you have a 17 year old, notoriously short on patience, force fetch a dog knowing nothing of a force fetch program?
Actually... he is very good with the dogs. He's been investigating Force Fetch Methods.

Re: Thanks for all the advice
Thanks for all your thought! Here are some responses Personally, I think the common denominator between the two dogs is: 1. I did not force fetch them. 2. They UBBER hunting instinct but not strong retrieving instinct. I'm going to give Colin's advice a try. If that does not work... I'll have my 17 ...

Re: Hard time getting pup to kennel
Here is my take. Our 1st GSP was a nightmare to kennel train. We just had to be patient. Now she kennels on command. Remamber, mistakes happen. The good news is that dogs live in the present and soon forget the past. I assume you keep the dog in your home? If that is the case... I would suggest brin...

Looking for NON-forced fetch tips
I have a six year GSP. She Points, Holds, Honor/backs... and will find a down bird... but not retrieve the birds. We can get her to retrieve for a few feet but she always is aggravated by the feathers and drops the bird and spits feathers. She'll retrieve anything I throw for her in the field. I've ...

My 19 month GSP came down with Uveitis. The Vet can't tell me why she came down with this condition. Does anyone have any thoughts?
