It has been awhile since I have contributed here, good to see the site is firing on all cylinders. I've been meaning to share some pics of my early season grouse hunts here in central, NY but time has been tough to come by this season. Cedar and I have managed to spend 17 hours afield, flushing 26 r...

The Ruffie hunting has been pretty tough the last month or so. Jumpy birds have been a challenge for Cedar to pin down, he has developed a tendency to crowd them and when they move he lunges in and flushes. He actually caught two wild fledgling grouse when he was a year old...not good for business. ...

Nice to see that you and your dogs had a good season. Bummer about all the hunting pressure, I have experienced the same at a lot of places I hunt as well. Jumpy birds and not a whole lot of them. Thanks for sharing the details of your season, enjoyed your post.

Hello all, looking for some advice. My 2 1/2 yo setter seems pretty ill. Do all my upland hunting on public land, never had a problem with deer hunters, 100's of thousands of acres to spread out on up here. At times you have to bounce between northern and southern zone seasons accordingly but I wouldn't let it deter you from grouse hunting at all.

Hunted through some nice cover today. Sadly, the woodcock had moved out but Ruff was still in his usual haunts. Moved a dozen birds in a half days effort, can't complain. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k176/patagonia1/ruff/GEDC0015.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k176/patagonia1/ruff/GEDC00...

Re: Beeper or no Beeper...That is the question?!
The beepers take away from the serene experience of the hunt for me, just too intrusive in the grouse cover. They definitley are a good tool, especially for a big running dog or tall grass. I just prefer a small brass bell.

Had a blast with the pup again this morning. We hunted some orchard cover and moved about 10 birds. Our woodcock season has been extended from 30 days to 45 days in the northeast this year. They have added a week on the front end and a week on the back end which is great. Take advantage when the flight birds are in. They usually don't stay put for long, maybe a couple days at best. If the cover is good, another batch will put the landing gear down in it as well. Last year we had good flights here in NY and they were in early, actually before the season even started. ...

All good info, thanks for the advice. We typically run them solo and rotate one day on, one day off. We hunt Ruffies in thick, nasty cover. Grapevines, scraggly overgrown crab apple orchards, blackberry tangles etc. When we hunt our setters in a brace they tend to compete with each other like it's a race. Inevitably they run over and bump a lot more birds than if they are on the ground solo and rar...
