Re: Hunting the Dakotas w/a pointing dog
I hunt both Dakota's with a GSP. The reality is if you're going to hunt wild birds, especially late in the season...you better learn to hunt quiet and work the wind properly. Most people that complain about birds flushing too far out are screaming on their whistle and walking with the wind at their...

Re: Warning to hunters in the cattails
I just got back from SD where -18 was the overnight low all three nights I was there. On Saturday I was walking in some cattails totally unaware that i was even on ice since I was only about 10 yards from mowed grass, I fell through just above my knees. It was certainly scary and unexpected. Be care...

Re: Banded Waterfowl
I've shot thousands of ducks and never seen a band. Seen a few on geese. That said I really could care less, often i don't even check until I'm cleaning them. If we did shoot a banded one i'd probably give it away. I did shoot two banded pheasants in SD two years ago. One was a $50 gift card the oth...

I shot two banded birds in one year out there in 2011. One was a $25 gift card to use within a certain city limits, one got me a $30 gift card to an appliance store.
They release those, they may release more...its tough to say if a city does it on their own behalf.

I figured I would see the the massive decline in wild pheasant hunting in my lifetime, I just didn't think it would come so soon. The weather had an impact on the pheasants, but the declining habitat is also impacting the pheasants and will impact their ability to bounce back. Pricing are going to g...

Some of these have already been said but I'll just list off the ones I see people not follow the most often. 1. Be ready to get out of the truck and start walking within 1 min. Not pull up to a hunting spot mess around with the collar, your jacket, boots, everything else. 2. Dont slam the door, dont...

I've had people ask if mine is a Dalmatian. For the most part the feedback i get is really positive. By no means am I saying this is true, but I had heard a rumor that the reason the AKC wouldn't recognize black is because it is more of a dominant color gene and they were worried about liver becomin...

I have the same problem with my GSP, beeping/knicking him doesn't seem to work. I asked a trainer what the best thing to do is and he said use a soft/foam wiffle ball bat. Don't beat the dog down with it but just wap him on the snout when he whines. Haven't tried it yet but I guess its worth a shot....

Hunting with the wind is challenging for even an experienced dog. The problem being that dogs that use the wind to their advantage will likely range out a bit further so they can push into the wind back towards you, the problem is there is a chance the will bump a bird on their way out. Sometimes it...

Duck hunting in ND can be relatively easy if you time it right and put in some work. I never brought a boat because it was too much of...
