Re: Talk me out of a Filson vest
I have a WingWorks vest. Best vest money can buy. It is not overkill, has the features you need and the best thing about it is it has a place to carry water for your four legged friend. I would imagine the Filson is nearly the same price as the WingWorks.

I hunt a half hour north of Duluth and saw good numbers. I only put three in the bag over the weekend but moved over thirty. The three birds I took were all juvenile birds so I'm thinking the hatch was a success. I'm pretty excited about the season!

Anyone else running into a bunch of Woodcock in MN? I've just been out at the dog park and they have been around for the past two weeks. It has been priceless training thats for sure. well, my weekend got cut waaaay short. We drove up to north Friday after work and got settled in the hotel around midnight. Got up early the next morning and saw 4 grouse and 8 woodcock on our first walk that was about an hour and a half long. My GSF "German Shorthair Flusher" was back in action but...

Well I was out this weekend close to the same spots I reported the outrageous numbers. I didn't see nearly that many birds. I think I counted 8 ruffed flushes and 3 woodcock saturday, I managed to get 1 woodcock that was a wild flush. I was joking all day about my "German Shorthaired Flusher". Sure ...

Re: How to stop chewing on bird?
+1 on the gun shy comment. Intro to gun needs to be done in a controlled environment when the pup is concentrated on birds!
As far as the chewing goes, I would only have the pup retrieve birds in a controlled environment with a check cord on.

How do your dogs hold up?
Went grouse hunting in the northern MN woods this weekend. We beat a lot of thick brush, walked logging roads/trails etc. After 2 days of hunting, my dog and my buddies dogs were just beat up. Pretty raw on front/back legs, few cuts and scrapes, my dogs eyes were beat up etc. These were both shortha...

Thanks for the info. I'll try the suggestions. I don't put any oil in the action after I clean it. The slide rails do get gummed up a little.
