I'll be heading to Pittsburg NH tomorrow for my annual grouse hunting trip. Has anyone been up there yet? I've been getting mixed feedback on grouse numbers. I've hunted quite a bit of central NH this year and I've put up a lot of woodcock but only and handful of grouse.

Re: Medial Patellar Luxation in 10 mo old pup.
Thanks for the responses. I just got back from a consultation with the surgeon. The pup is scheduled to get both her knees fixed on the 18th. She did say she may have to cut and pin one of the bones in her right knee. If she does that she won't repair the left at the same time. She's worried the pup...

Medial Patellar Luxation in 10 mo old pup.
My 10 month old French Brit just got diagnosed with Medial Patellar Luxation in both her knees. Grade 3 in her right and Grade 2 in her left. Her right knee cap gets dislocated frequently and on occasion I have to help her get it back in. The vet showed me how to do it. I was told she would need sur...

10 month old pup still p**ing in the house
I have a 10 month old French Brit who will still pee in the house from time to time. She seems to understand that when I bring her out to her special spot in woods near the house she's suppose to do her business and does. She never soils her kennel. I bring her out frequently to play, and go potty y...

Re: Gun Shy or Bird Shy
So I've been taking the pup back out into the field with some feral pigeons. I'll put a rubber band on one wing and pretty much played fun retrieve with it. She's crazy to get the pigeon and brings it back for another go every time. She hasn't mauled any of them yet. I'll use the same bird for 5-10 ...

Re: Gun Shy or Bird Shy
To all who responded, thanks for the advice. I thought she was progressing really well. The birds I was shooting over were not her first exposure. And we were only popping shotgun primers at about 25 yards or so. I thought I was pretty safe. I'll put the gun away for a while and let her chase some c...

Gun Shy or Bird Shy
I have a 6 1/2 month old French Brit pup I've started working on trapped feral pigeons. I keep them in an old bunny hutch for a couple of days before I've used them. She demonstrated no fear what so ever of the birds while they were in the hutch. She would run around the pen and put her paws up on t...

Re: Should I train my pointing dog to sit
Well, I'm glad to see the conformity of the opinions here. I have decided to hold off training sit for now. At 12 weeks she knows "come", "kennel", "pee", "poop" and "drop it". I've just started work on "whoa". I have noticed that when we play wing on a string, if I make her hold for too long...

Should I train my pointing dog to sit
I've just become a new owner of an 11 week old French Brit pup. I've always hunted over flushing retrievers and this is my first pointing breed. My dogs have all been taught to sit for their food, sit when guests come to the house, sit when the neighbors kids come running and screaming over to us to...

Re: best breeds for ruffed grouse and woodcock
As I said before I've never worked with a pointing breed. I went to a seminar at the New Hampshire Fish and Game office a couple of years ago to watch a gentleman show how he trains his GSPs. He had a couple of pups and I was pretty impressed at how quickly he was able to get them to respond to his ...

Re: best breeds for ruffed grouse and woodcock
Lots of good stuff here to chew over. Thanks for all your input. A few folks have sent me private messages about pups they have on the way. I'm no where near ready to make a choice, but thanks for the notes. I'm thinking I might do it next year. There is a place near by (Sharpe's Farm in Hopkinton)t...

best breeds for ruffed grouse and woodcock
Hello all, This is my first post to Gun Dog Forum so I thought I would start a fight. What in your opinion is the best breed for hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock in the woods of Northern New England. I have owned a Lab that I hunted stocked pheasants and ducks with. I got him from a from th...
