Squirt's first Woodcock!
Got Squirt out for the first time this year this past weekend and bagged his first Woodcock. This came as quite a surprise since I haven't seen a Woodcock in this part of Southern Illinois in about 20 years (doesn't mean they haven't been there, I just haven't seen them). After stomping around for a...

Re: GSP ate a quail!
You never want to shock a dog with a bird in the mouth, especially. What would happen if you got shocked everytime you did a good job at work? You would quit trying to perform well. In turn that is what you were teaching the dog. Doing this with a working collar could easily break the dog from want...

I use the e collar for two reasons, safety (for example, he is in danger of being hurt or killand can't hear a recall command) or if he is ignoring a command that i know he knows and can hear me, which usually doesn't happen.

GSP ate a quail!
Okay, so yesterday we are on our last quail hunt of the season, half of us were on one side of a strip cut and the other half were on the other side with my GSP Squirt (we got separated and were waiting for a spot for the other group to cross). A single quail got up and we shot it, the bird fell int...

Sorry to hear that.
Hope things work out for you. My dog has never attempted to jump our fence, but I still dread the day that something really provokes him to, had a neighbor who's dog got a paw pretty torn up from a failed jump.

Any dog that rolls in sh** is the hardest to clean up! Any long-haired dog seems to be a pain unless they have been shaved. I have a Vizsla now, and that dog can look like Pigpen when we leave the field, but it doesn't take long for her to dry out and not have a spot of dirt on her. She is the most...

Seems to me, just reading the posts here, it all depends on who you ask. Just came across this beauty during a re-read of "The Bobwhite Quail Book" by Lamar Underwood, the quote is actually from an entry written by Gene Hill "My Respects to Mr. Bob" “I felt strange and somewhat rude as I walked in behind the point and honor – I was a man walking into what was so much lik...

Looks aren't as important to me, as long as the dog is healthy and from responsible breeding and can find the birds I'd be happy. Now that said, I definitely enjoy having a dog that is easy on the eyes, and would go with looks if all else is equal.

My 5 year old GSP (in tact) pees frequently in the field as well, seems like he stops every few minutes and pees. Doesn't really bother me though, he still carries on hunting hard after he pees, so I guess I've just learned to live with it. Never had him pee on another person though
