Really? Point a bird and you can do well in NAVHDA?
Duck search? Water desire? If you haven't done it yourself, I wouldn't jump out there and say its that easy.
Field trials and AKC hunt tests - run and point with a lame retrieve....does that sound like a fair assessment?

Re: Dog Clubs Near York, PA
Preston (and his wife Vicki) raise chukar and a few pheasant. He supplies a lot of the local dog clubs and hunt tests. Its a small family farm with some grass/hay fields, maybe 80 acres, that you can use. He has a dog training area permit so you can shoot 7 days/week.

Bwire,
How come you haven't come out with Keystone? We'll be at Preston's farm on Church Road between East Berlin and York next weekend. Come on out and check it out. Only about 5-10 minutes from New Oxford.

Re: NAVDHA Vizsla
Take some time to look through the Vizsla test scores on the NAVHDA web site. The yearly test reports are there for free and sorted by breed so you can quickly look at all the Vizsla test scores for the past several years (2003 - 2009).

The Keystone website should be up - if not, its just a temporary thing. You can also train at Preston's Bird Farm between East Berlin and York. Preston's number in located on the Keystone website under training birds. The York Pointer and Setter club is a membership club with nice grounds but there ...

Completely steady is the way to go.
Nothing worse than a dog breaking at flush or on the first shot when there's multiple birds and/or inexperienced gunners.
Steady = safety and peace of mind.

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
I'm in PA. I know there are NAVHDA dogs without Hustler, but the number of linebred or inbred stud dogs without Hustler are few...and I want to emphasize the linebred or inbred part there. I also consider overall conformation in my breeding selections as well - coat, size, head type and tail set. I'...

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
I think Cecil was brought into the equation to compensate for the soft pointing and flagging. But he brought other undesireable characteristics too. I personally didn't use him so I can't speak from too much first hand knowledge. You guys in the midwest have seen more Cecil offspring than I have. Bu...

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
Mr. Hill - I fully agree, and that is what I was getting at. Many of us now have Hege-Haus, Pottsiepen (mainly Hege-Haus and Wasserschling), and Hustler crossed lines. Mr. Jennings - Hustler offspring have been linebred and inbred with some excellent success and that is the Hustler inbreeding that I...

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
Breeders have been line breeding and inbreeding Hustler offspring for many years. His impact is widespread. A look at many NAVHDA kennel websites and pedigrees shows it. Trying to find a NAVHDA tested, linebred dog that is Hustler-free is not impossible but there are not that many. I went to the DKV...

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
Of course its Hustler. Great dog and some great offspring. But we don't need every kennel breeding Hustler dogs. Some diversity is needed too. And if you think that Hustler was problem-free then you have your head in the sand. I'm an advocate of line breeding and close inbreeding. But we need other ...

Re: over-used sires causing a genetic bottleneck?
In looking at the NAVHDA GSPs, I see one particular sire that has resulted in a bottleneck. Interesting thing is the dog was never NAVHDA tested but is a DC dog. He is found multiple times in many kennel's pedigrees. It is prevelant in my pedigrees and when looking for an outcross, it is sometimes d...

Been a while since I had an ultrasound done but I agree the experience of the vet plays into it. However, I would think nearly any vet could confirm pregnancy - counting puppies is another story. I've had experienced vets miscount using ultrasound and with Xray.

Cindy, I agree in that I question why the GSPCA would allow blacks to be registered and run for a FC but not a CH/DC. All or nothing seems more appropriate to me. My DK history is a little rusty but wasn't the AKC standard originally written in the 30s? About the same time that black pointers were b...

The judges score what they se...

Good post Ken and while I was out mowing I was thinking the same thing....as Cindy said - two of her dogs have black in the pedigree a few generations back so black dogs have contributed to what is now in her line. Cindy don't get mad at me for saying that. Your second paragraph - I would use dogs w...

The first black DK/GSP that I saw work in the field is still one of the best performing dogs I have witnessed. That dog was KS Orson vom Pottsiepen during his Solms test. I bred to him based on performance - not color. Since then I have owned blacks on and off - I currently do not own a black dog. H...

Re: Now that there's a FC/AFC Black Shorthair...
I haven't seen any gain in coat pigment with breedings to black but it is an easy way to increase the odds of darker eyes.
Obviously the Germans weren't right about everything....but then again, neither are the Americans.
Nobody is perfect...and no dog is either.

I can't argue what you have seen - I can only state what I have witnessed. I believe part of the reasoning for introducing black into the DK/GSPs many years ago (75-80 years ago?) was to improve pigment and eye color. I'm a fan of any quality dog that can do it in the field and water with correct co...

My understanding is that a bluehen is one that produces outstanding offspring while being bred to various studs.....i.e. the female is very prepotent and passes on outstanding traits no matter which stud is used. In GSPs I see a lot of repeat breedings....outstanding offspring from repeated breeding...
