Re: Not Pointing Grouse
Bigshooter the answer to your first question is found in the remainder of the sentence (shoot too many birds over dogs other than britts that gag me. i would just as soon hunt behind a hot springer as many of the "pointing" dogs that they use) it all comes down to what you think the dog is doing and...

Re: Not Pointing Grouse
if you like you can get combative but the statements: "grousedogs are made not born" & "you probably should stay away from pheasant with the caveat (in the beginning) are closest to the truth. i've raised britts for 30+ years and have known many grouse hunters that shoot too many birds over dogs oth...

Re: Backing problems

Re: Is this normal...
yes your dog is normal, as several have stated in different ways the bird needs to fly away, the farther away the better. i have listened to similar stories for years. use pigeons, the dog obviously likes them and they will work much better than any other bird and her is why. once the prey drive is ...

Re: Backing problems
sharon first , it is much easier to teach a dog to back, especially one that is reluctant to do so, by setting up a situation where the dog not only suddenly sees the pointng dog but scents the birds. this is not saying that a dog should back by scent but that the scent will help instill the pint wh...
