Re: e collar recommendations

I like tritronix. The more levels of stimulation the better. Remember though that your not going to use the collar to train your dog. The dog need to know the commands and be conditioned with the collar to those commands.

Re: WILD BIRD OR PIGEONS FOR TRAINING?..

Here is the big advantage to pen raised bird IMO. Pen raised birds are always where you want them when you want them. Wild birds...even if they are there, if you are working with a young dog with little experience with birds you may not find them. Just because they are pen raised birds doesn't mean ...

Re: Under ground fencing & E-Collars

It is not uncommon. We figure it has to do with the dog not having visible boundaries. It has received a correction for breaching a boundary in the past and when it receives a correction for a training response error, it doesn't associate the correction with its action, but with being in the wrong ...

Gunfire doesn't bother him at all. I am hunting him on wild birds,(should I be planting pen raised birds instead?) but in an area that I know there going to be large cuvvies of quail. I've shot birds over him before and he seems fine with it. He will leave my side when I give him the dead bird comm...

Under ground fencing & E-Collars

I had worked with a dog this past year that I knew the owner used underground fencing. This dog progressed very well through yard work and obedience training. I conditioned this dog to the e-collar while I was still working her with a checkcord and she did great. took real well to it. But... once sh...

Re: Cant get pup to hunt in front

How is his reaction to the gunfire? If your dog does not have a lot of bird drive it is probably not the right time to be shooting over him. If the dog is not properly conditioned to and comfortable with gunfire it may discourage him from making bird contact. Not saying this is the problem but worth...

I like the collars with a O ring that is built in the center of the collar away from the buckle. not the kind with a D ring next to the buckle. I like "wing and shot". You should also read "Snake Foot: the making of a champion" it is more so about Robert Wehle's (Elhew) breeding program, but is very interesting.

My favorite book I ever read about training was "Best way to train your bird dog: The Delmar Smith Method"

I would recommend not using birds too much. If you do too much retrieving with birds, when it comes time the dog is introduced to live planted birds he may want to pick them up verses pointing them. Put the dummy away for a few days and then bring it back out. If he is not bringing it back to you tr...

The easiest way I have found to build one is to use a galvanized pipe that is 1 1/2'' O.D. to extend out from the atv. On the end that the dog/dogs will be connected to I attached a eye bolt to snap a chain onto. (Make sure the chain has a swivel on both ends.) Now on the ATV, attach a pipe that has...

Your dog is bred well. I can tell you that she is line bred. If you would go back one more generation you would see that NFC Heide's Mighty City Slicker and FC Liverhead Spike the Gold are out of the same sire and dam. I don't know if they are littermates or if this breeding was done more than once.

It also works well to road the dog to an area where he will be doing something that he enjoys. When I go to my training field to work birds I road the dogs to the location and put them all on a chain gang. I then run them one by one on liberated quail. It takes a dog that it new to roading no time t...

24'' X 36'' would be plenty big for only 10 - 15 birds. I would build it with a wire mesh floor. Being you are not needing to hold a lot of birds the pen can be small and portable and you can put it where ever you want. If you want to recall your birds it is not going to work having it in the air.

The most important thing to do with an e-collar is to correctly condition/introduce the dog to the stimulation. A e-collar is not something you can just strap on and expect the dog to correctly respond to when you use it. A e-collar is not a tool to teach command. The collar should only be used to c...
