I was out hunting sharptail around Isabel a couple of weeks ago. The sharptail numbers this year are huge. However, much of it wasn't traditional sharptail hunting. We had our best luck in unpicked corn (which isn't real thick West River) and it was more like pheasant hunting. We finally just kept t...

Just to add to the above. Later in the season when the snow is on the ground, look for melted bare spots on south-facing slopes. The cheat grass will sprout up and those spots become magnets for chukar. And the best advice is to get out and find your own spots. And if you find one that has lots of b...

I've been using high velocity 6's, but that may change in the future. The birds we've been running into in NW South Dakota are pretty tough. I just got back from a hunting trip near Isabel. It's quite a ways from Miller, but we saw tons of game. We were hunting sharptails and the numbers were phenomenal. We saw hundreds of birds in two days. And we also saw plenty of pheasants. We were in the northwest portion of the state and it sounded...

I echo the other comments. Every few years you'll see an early storm, but it can also be gorgeous that time of the year. I grew up in S.D. but live in Idaho now. I subscribe to my dad's "massive lead theory." It involves an autoloader with the plug removed. Funny story -- a friend of my sister had an escape artist for a dog. It escaped and was picked up by animal control and taken to the shelter. They called her and she went to pick it up. They charged her a big chunk of money as a fine to get her dog back. About a week later old Fido made his escape a...

I just had my girl spayed and our vet said to wait 10-14 days before any real exercise. She got some short walks around the block starting a couple of days after the surgery. Yesterday -- day 11 -- I took her out and let her run for about 30 minutes with no issues. Her incision area looks fine. Note...

I've confirmed the overeating theory with an unofficial and unplanned test. Last week my wife's dog managed to get into the cabinet where we keep the dog food. We don't really know how much she ate, but the first thing she did when we let her out of that room was to pound water. Not long after that,...

That's good news. They've gone to three years after the first rabies booster here too.
Unfortunately, some vets are still recommending annual DHPP shots. Even the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines now recommend DHPP every three years after the booster.
