Re: PLEASE HELP! my ep is driving me crazy!

Ok listen here's the best advice you are gonna get.... BUY A BOOK and Read it!!! Follow whatever program you choose step by step! You have no idea what you are doing and by what I have read thus far you have no structured training. YOU CANT JUST TAKE A DOG AND HUNT IT UNTIL IT'S A GOOD GUN DOG!! You...

Re: Fast pick-up, slow retrieving!!!

I dont think a dog thats a little slower is always a bad thing. Some dogs are complete maniacs and others are a little slower and methodical. When you say he's taking the lazy route back to you do you mean he's getting out of the water and running the bank?

As far as the retrieving goes sounds like FF is the next step but with the pointing and all that I have no idea I'm a retriever guy. Good Luck!

Re: need help training my lab

I'm just saying it's real simple first you get step A down then move to step B not skip to B cause the dog isnt quite getting A. If that makes any sense!?!? I didnt pick up that his pup wasnt steady. They are all steady if they arent seeing birds fall. Just my.02

Re: need help training my lab

No No No! Blinds are great but in the field you primarily want you dog to mark birds. Allthough it is great having a dog that will handle but I have seen a bunch of great retrivers that dont handle and rarely lose birds. Get a buddy to throw marks for you, your dog is conditioned to the birds coming...

Re: Sitting by Whistle

Is he collar conditioned? If so you can use continuous until he sits when his but hits the ground turn off the pressure after about a week of that he will comply much faster. You probably should go through all of it again work on Sit whistle on lead then you can work out farther little by little to ...

Check craigslist! I bought a dogtra 1200NCP off a guy for $40. He used it a couple times and said it didnt work on his german shepard lol. Personally I prefer Dogtra products .

Re: Water retrieves....

MG: I think you hit the nail on the head. Probably he does this when I thrown badly. Surprised it does not happen more since quite often I throw them in the field instead of the pond. So...when you in the process of FF with a dog, you do nothing in the water with retrieving? I swim him about 6x/wee...

Re: Retrieving

Show him its fun toss it up and play it up as much as you can just a few retrieves is fine then put it up when he really wanting more. Also zip tie a wing to the bumper that oughta keep him interested longer and after he gets that desire built up take the wing off. good luck

Re: looking for someone to train with.......

I live in Avon (just west of Indy) but I'm a retriever guy. Try Indiana sportsmans forum there are actually a lot of people on there looking for training partners. Also I am looking for birds so if you know where I can get my hands on some hit me up thanks.

Re: Training Equipment

I think a really good place to start is by buying a dvd called "duck dog basics" with chris akin who is for sure one of the best trainers out there. just google it I think its around $20 it focuses just as much on new handlers as well as what to do from bringing the pup home to a finished gun dog. B...

Re: Training collars

I personally like dogtra collars the best. All I use is nick and cont. no beeper no pager. I feel like those features are warning your dog which I am not a fan of. My dog is not going to be warned. she is gonna do what I tell her when I tell her. But thats just my 2 cents

Re: Dog doesn't want to retrieve...

Well you say he is 6 months and I am betting he is starting to get his adult teeth in. Retrievers will act pretty funny when they are getting their adult teeth. Try to use soft bumpers or something more pliable so you arent associating pain with retrieves or bumpers. One thing I do is take a break o...

Re: Training??!?!!?!

I am surprised that no one has said it yet but up to a few months of age the one thing you should be focusing on is SOCIALIZATION!! Get out and take her to to new places introduce her to all of the people you can expose her to all the smells she will encounter when she is hunting and training. Many ...
