I am of the belief that not all dogs are capable of being broke.

Ezzy you've never heard of a "whip and run?" It's way more common then you think. I just don't think you're in the right arena to really know what goes on.

The reason I asked is if you did then the dog simply thinks he's retrieving a shot bird back to you. No harm no foul. He doesn't know the difference.

Garrison let me add too that its the dogs makeup that causes him to shorten. Not the method of training.

I'll also say this. You don't have to push a big going dog. He goes through the country because he wants to not because you're making him.

Its been my experience that some dogs only like to run "on their terms" and when you go to get a handle on them or put manners on them they can no longer do it on their terms so they will shorten up. Garrison I don't have a set method really. I've taken some ideas from here and there and adapted it to fit what I like.

Gertie there are a lot of factors that will affect your dogs range before it's all said and done. I wouldn't be too caught up on your dogs range at this point. You may break this dog and the dog may shorten up on you and never go back to running at all. You never know what's gonna happen with them.

30 minutes of roading done right can replace 2 hours of free running.

I start ours in a roading harness off the four wheeler when they are about a year old. Like Ray said a little at a time. But they are running miles in it by the time they are 18 months old.

Would you agree or disagree that developing a gundog is different then developing a trial dog. For me a year old gundog busting birds is a little different then a year old trial prospect doing it.

Funny ultra. Funny thing is that dog came to me that way.

Second funny thing is you would NEVER say anything like that to me if we were standing face to face.

You should try it sometime. In my experience the end result is a dog much more staunch then any other way. I have to have a dog that is over the hill broke without any collar on him. I have found the belly collar the best route to get there.

Slistoe I have tried just leaving him, singing him on, whistling him on and nothing works. He just stands there whoaed because that's what he thinks the collar means. It's really frustrating because this dog has some tools to win. Oh well.

I'm sorry but getting a trial dog right is done in phases. You don't pattern a dog and break him on his birds at the same time so this argument doesn't hold water.
