Re: E-COLLARS..TO USE OR NOT TO USE?
My passion is birddogs, I joined this forum to learn and share my experiences as well. I never intended or implied that I know it all, I just shared how I dealt with the issue at hand and let the op figure if they will use it or leave it. I just believe that if it worked for me it should work for so...

All I am saying is some of us choose to do things differently, I have used an e collar and definitely know the advantages of it, but I also wanted to train alitte differently this time. Some of us dont have the time or resources others do (i.e. land). Majority of my training is done in my backyard w...

Ruth, everyone has to train in the way they enjoy and in a way they are successful with. As I say, I do think the collar is the best method, but I've used all the methods over a 50 year period and settled on it. This doesn't mean it's right for you. Experiment and use the system you enjoy and reali...

Some good points. What I have done is just pick the pup up and put him in the kennel while giving him the command, they will eventually get it and love going in because they know kennel=fun.

I have a buddy who hunts chucks with a springer, he loves it. The dog should work close because when those chucks burts out they are gone quick. They hold very well in the late season so the pup can get real close, just make sure you know how to read your pup.

IMO, whoa can be a good command and a bad one as well if used at the wrong time. For example, if a dog is on point and the he starts to creep forward, this can be a good thing because he may be learning to relocate or follow a running bird. Give him a whoa command here and your impedeting his learni...

Nice looking pup Trudi, what type of game birds do you have in the RSA? I was there last year this time and if I had known of any bird hunting spots I would have definitely stayed a bit longer. I am hoping to return sometime in the near future, just fell in love with country.

Short answer is, No, I believe it is never too early if the pup is able to handle what is thrown at it. My 6 month old gsp/brittany is steady to wing and shot (most of the time) after teaching him just a couple times. Thats my opinion, im sure others will disagree.

As a mixed breed owner (gsp/brittany) I would say it is not a bad idea IF you have taken into consideration certain things.
