Re: Lost my old hunting partner this afternoon
So sorry for your loss. Sometimes, it's the unexpected losses that are the hardest to understand. But, having watched my 10 year old lab struggle with cancer for months before letting her go, it just might be for the best. 13 years is a long time but it leaves a deep void. Again, sorry for your loss...

Re: GSP Limping - Ideas?
a sprained/pulled groin muscle Did he/she specify which muscle? Wondering if it is an iliopsoas strain (may be referred to as a psoas strain). No, he didn't say. He said all bones and ligaments are intact and strong and range of movement was good on everything except the hip. All joints were good, ...

Re: GSP Limping - Ideas?
The vet said it was a sprained/pulled groin muscle so no permanent damage. It's amazing to me that she'll run 100mph through a field, slam herself into walls around the house and jump from 6 foot ledges and never hurt anything. But jack around with her on the floor and she pulls a groin. Who knew. T...

Re: GSP Limping - Ideas?
Thanks for the info, guys. She's doing better today, able to put weight on it (95% of the time) and doesn't act like anything ever happened. Makes me think it was muscle-related. I'll take her by the vet tomorrow to make sure it's nothing more serious.
Thanks again...

GSP Limping - Ideas?
My 8 month old came up lame in one hind leg tonight and, since her vet is closed until Monday, I thought I could get your opinions (dog dr, maybe?). The incident occurred when I was playing around with her on the floor. I flipped her around and she yelped. She got up and one hind leg was lame. She'l...

My guess is that you're exactly right, the session lasted too long. That's a long time to expect a pup to focus, I'd back up and keep the next outing really short and really fun. Then progress from there...

Re: New Pup
I had about 3 sleepless nights when I got my GSP, she just wouldn't give it up. No coddling, I didn't acknowledge her behavior at all and completely ignored her. The only thing that eventually silenced her was sticking a shirt in the kennel with her that I had been wearing earlier in the day. After ...

Re: Kennel Size
I went with this one, it comes with a divider that you can move as the dog grows. At 7 months, she's got plenty of room without the divider and it should be a perfect fit when full grown. It's great as long as you don't need to move it around... http://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Life-Stages-Double-Door-...

Re: E-collar help! Long story but how do I re-introduce?!?!
I'm certainly no pro, but it sounds like she doesn't have a clear grasp on what you want her to do in order to stop the stimulation. The e-collar really only works when the dog knows 100% what's expected of it and how to make the stimulation stop. If not, the result is panic and, in your instance, t...

Heat Cycle?
Any idea what age range I should expect my GSP to come into heat for the first time? I'm weighing my options on the optimal time to spay her. Vet recommends 8 months, I think the longer you can wait the better. That said, I've never been through a heat cycle with any dog and have no idea what to exp...

Another vote for the Xterra. Had mine for 9 years/135K miles and have enjoyed every minute. Take off the step rails, throw on some A/T tires and it'll take you anywhere you want to go. Plenty of room for a dog and gear in the back and you'll get around 20MPG. If you look at one used, be sure to chec...

Re: help with everything!
At 11 weeks I think you are asking way too much..Dogs can retain obedience much better at an older age, that said......You need to practice some real patience. At least you recognize the problem, now it is time to fix it. Do not throw away a perfectly good dog because you cannot control yourself. W...

Re: Possessive Eating?
Yeah, I probably worded that wrong. As you suggest, I was going to let her play with the frozen bird knowing that she couldn't eat/destroy it but had no intentions of letting her have a live bird at all. Out of curiosity, Is the whole "devour" mentality normal or do I have a problem in the making? T...

Possessive Eating?
Need some more great advice from you all. My 5-1/2 month old GSP is in the habit of eating any kind of dead animal in the yard, most recently a bird. By the time I noticed her with it and headed her direction, she swallowed the entire carcass whole. I had a similar issue on a walk a week prior, wher...

Re: GSP and odd leg issue
Thought I'd update this – it might help someone else. Took the pup in this AM and the vet examined both knee caps. Both are fine, no evidence or indication of a luxating patella. Also, there have been two more occurrences of the leg issue since the last visit, but nothing to explain them. Vet thinks...

I'm looking to introduce live birds to my GSP pup and was wondering if there was a source near KC for birds. Ideally I'd like to start with quail/pigeons. Any thoughts?

Re: GSP and odd leg issue
yes, vet time, but from your description i would be wondering about a luxating patella (dislocating kneecap). your vet should be able to feel it if thats the case. maybe not, though, as that would be odd in a larger sporting breed dog, but always possible. good luck Thanks for the info, everyone. GSP and odd leg issue
Hey all - I've got a 14 week old GSP that's got a weird leg issue. It's happened a few times since I got her (@ 8 weeks) where she'll be walking/playing/etc. and suddenly starts yelping and goes after her rear left leg. She favors it, won't put weight on it or let it touch the ground, yelps and lick...

e-Collar Question
Hey All - Quick e-collar question - I've never trained a dog using an e-collar (this is my first GSP, had a Lab in the past that didn't require it) but it looks like a necessary tool in the Perfection Kennels training program. I was given a used Dogtra 2000 (not the T&B), will that suffice? Do any o...
