Re: Barking problem

thanks guys. I think I'll try Cajuns route first. He's a little bit over 2yo right now. He gets plenty of exercise. I could have described the office setting better. My "office" is actually an office trailer on a 160 acre farm where my family keeps horses and cows. He gets tons of exercise every day...

Barking problem

My GSP has an issue I'm having trouble resolving. He barks at people. I bring him to the office with me every day where he meets lots of people and have since he was a puppy. So he's been well socialized. No one has ever been mean to him. But 3 out of 4 times someone comes in he barks his head off a...

Re: In the house

mine live sin the house and he is fine. He had a chewing stage when he was a puppy, now he just lies on the couch and chills. Occasionally he will go get a toy and come peck you with it trying to get you to play. But for the most part he's just fine.

I don't think he's ever eaten a sock or shoe.

Re: How old is too old?

Thanks guys. Me and my Girlfriend spent the whole weekend, plus friday, driving to various breeders and meeting dogs and talking pups (Drahthaars for me, German Shepherds for her). I thought a couple of them had pups on the ground that were 10 - 12 weeks old and I was considering getting one. Turned...

How old is too old?

I'm in the process of selecting a new pup for a second gun dog. had originally planned on getting a dog later on in the year so I wasn't really looking for breeders with pups. Well, my situation has changed a bit and I will be able to do it a bit sooner. My GSP I have now I took home at about 7 week...

leave that note on your car around here and you're just telling the illegals roughly how long they have to ransack your car before you come back.

Re: Racing homers for dog training (pigeons)

Thanks. In anticipation of getting a new pup soon I was planning on building a loft this weekend so I can get to work on establishing a colony. So this is of particular interest. A quick CL search turns up a bunch of birds available close by. I'm sure some of those will be young, resettleable birds

Re: Racing homers for dog training (pigeons)

Thanks. I always thought that they had to be raised in the loft to home to it.

Can this be done with only young birds or can birds of any age more or less be settled and made to home?

How exactly do you train them to home?

I assume that the training you're talking about and "getting them settled in" are the same thing.

Re: How much prey drive should you see how soon??

OK, I went and read some of your previous posts. It seems you have free-range chickens that you want the dog to ignore - why on earth you would let him "sniff and mess with" a hen is beyond me. I was just trying to spark some interest in birds and maybe give him a reason to want to find them. Natur...

Re: How much prey drive should you see how soon??

I had expected to have to worry about him chasing the chickens. But rather than be after them, he's shown at best passing interest.

Re: How much prey drive should you see how soon??

I also caught a young hen and held her for him to sniff and mess with. When I put her down she stayed still and he was kind of curious. When she got up and ran off he just watched then went back to sniffing around.

How much prey drive should you see how soon??

Ok, knucklehead (Jeager) is 9 1/2 weeks now and I'm starting to have some concerns. I know he's a baby, but how much hunting instinct/prey drive should I be seeing at this age? Before I got him I had been worried about keeping him from chasing my chickens, now he's showing only marginal or fleeting ...

Re: Weimaraner pup only plays keep away..will not retrieve

Thanks for all the good advice. We tried the hallway thing a few times last night and the first few throws he ran after the dummy grabbed it and just sat there tearing it up haha. When I tried to distract him with the other toy, he just dropped the other toy where he was at and ran my way to get th...

I have been trying to get him to play fetch with his bumper and rope. he gets excited about playing with it but has no interest whatever in bringing it back to me and when I pull him back he doesn't want to give it up. I've been making him give it but that seems to dull his interest in the toy altog...

Introducing Jaeger

Ok, finally got the pup. GSP, just a hair over 7 weeks old. I suppose I need to get a handle on this training thing and get to it. Also need to figure out a way to stop hm from leaving little Jaeger bombs all over the place! So far he only has two speeds. Sleep, and full throttle mischief. http://i4...

Chicken question

Hi all. About to pick up my new GSP pup. I was planning on bring him to the office with me everyday and working with him here. It is on 157 acres, about 50 of which is good habitat and has birds in it. I figured I would be able to take him out and work with him and let him find birds 2 or 3 times a ...

Will dog become disinterested in bird scent?

Hi all, brand new to the forum and to dog training. Unless you want to train the dog to ignore me and sleep on the couch all day. I've got that DOWN! I'm getting a GSP pup soon and will be doing my best to train him for quail hunting. I would also like to train him for blood trailing as well, but th...
