Heck, I've already seen cut corn here in NE. Will be very interested to see what the drought has done to the bird numbers....

I'd get on the horn with the breeder and ask her to explain exactly what she is talking about. No shame in that.

I've been using sratch grain and grit they sell at the feed store (1lb of grit to 40lb of grain per the grit bag) and game bird feed at a 50/50 mix. Not sure if that helps you, but the birds seem to be doing fine.

MikeB - He is referring to a particular brand.

I'd spring for the DD3 if you are going to kennel 2 dogs of that size(currently own 2 DD3's)...but obviously, you can also use a DD2.

They are good dog houses, also like the K-9 Kondo.

Re: Braques Francais breeders?

I know a Braque Francais from a kennel named Chambois located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Had a few chances to do some training with them, and she was a nice little spitfyre of a dog who obtained a Prize 1 in her NA test in our area. Importing a pup from Canada is easier than you would think. Plus...

If pheasant are your main bird, I would have to agree that the 12 gauge is the better choice. A lot of the places I hunt them are nontox or are in places where you might jump a duck. The 12 is definitly better when you are shooting steel.

I have never seen it have any effect whatso ever. Just don't thinkthat a dog has enough thinking ability to figure out you did something bad and decide it doesn't like you as a result. I use a SKB 505 with 26 inch bbls. Hunt primarily pheasant and sharptails. Get into quail and prairie chickens as well when hunting down near the KS border. The most important thing is having shotgun that fits you and swings well.

Re: "Bench" Setter and Hunting

I don't see why you couldn't turn him into an adequate bird dog. He'll be lighter on the prey drive and slower than a trial setter, but you can get him to find a bird, point it and retrieve it to you. Especially in a preserve setting. I once trained a american cocker I bought out of the paper for $2...

Re: The Economy and Vets

I give shots at home, see the vet when someone is sick, and have rabies done in the office. I can't afford 6 dogs AND a monthly trip to the vet for shots. The dogs are all house dogs, and 4 of the 6 are shown, so all are groomed frequently, so we know pretty fast when someone isn't feeling well or ...

Re: Pawing at ears

And that is the whole point. All dogs occasionally rub their ears . but if you've noticed it to be excessive, happening more often then usual, then a problem is likely. I think it is worth a trip to the vet as they can use an instrument to look deep into to the ears where the trouble may lurk. +1. ...

Re: Lifestyle or hobby?? Opinions PLEASE!

There is some good advice and insights on this thread. Digest what has been posted and ask yourself if you will have time to work with the dog. Birddogs are great family companions, but they are energetic, inquisitive beasts. You will need to spend time with that dog daily. You will need to get it o...

A dog being good on pen raised birds is training. A dog being good on wild birds is God given. No truer words were ever posted on a forum. Thank Big sugar. I'm fortunate to have access to both. If you can, actively take advantage of wild birds. They will give your dog a good, balanced disposition on...

Speaking as a south-paw I have found off-the-shelf SKB's to be "cast-neutral". I own 3 (28, 20, 12 OU) and can hit equally well with them all.

Good luck.

Keep her in shape and if you only plan to breed once she should be fine. my self I try to wait till 2 1/2 to breed. A good policy. My opinion. Don't breed dogs before they are 2yr. You need time to see if they are worthy of being bred. Specifically, do they hunt proficiently and can they physically...

Agree with TdHusker and Coop.

Pheasant are not quail. I sometimes get points when a roster get pinned between 2 dogs. My 8 year old griff bitch has learned how to end run roosters as we get towards the end of a push. Only experience can teach that.
