Re: Garmin Alpha, Astro, Tri-Tronics Upland Special
I used a Astro 320/DC40 and Pro 100 G3 for a year. When the Alpha came out at $1100-1200, I didn't want to spring for the bucks. But as soon as it dropped to $800, I bought in. My take is that if you are worried about something better coming along making it obsolete, you are worrying about the wron...

Garmin Alpha, Astro, Tri-Tronics Upland Special
Forgive me if this has been beat to death. I have used the search function. I have been using a Tri-Tronics Upland Special on a single dog for 10+ years and would be totally lost without it. The e-collar and beeper have been invaluable and I simply will not hunt without it. Well the batteries will n...

Re: 35 lb German Shorthair
I'll bet she loves you already! Cruising around sniffing stuff in the woods beats the heck out of what she was doing before. Glad you could pick her up. She sure is a pretty little thing. I was looking at the vegetation in your picture and was curious about where you were located. No need for speci...

Re: Quail Pen
I built a small portable re-call pen that was...I think...4x8. It was like 16" tall. It had a small house on the end and the other 6 ft was enclosed with wire. It would slide perfectly in the bed of a pick up. It was divided down the middle. I would put a dozen quail in one side. Each day I would ex...

Re: 35 lb German Shorthair
Well I got the little girl from my buddy. Right now she is 13 months old and 33 lbs. I LOVE her size as I have always hunted 50-60 lb dogs. She has spent her entire life in a apartment, 8 hrs a day in a crate. I spent one evening doing some very basic whoa and come training and the little girl picke...

35 lb German Shorthair
I have a buddy with 1 year old GSP female he is offering to give me. Right now she is 35 lbs. That seems kind of small to me, but the vet says she is healthy. Anyone have any that small. She looks kinda funny to me as all my GSP have been 50-70 lbs.

I use these from K9 Kondo. They are pricey, but they work great.

Re: mounting a duck after year or so?
I think it would be fine. My brother is a taxidermist and he mounted a wild turkey for me that had been in the freezer for almost 2 years and it turned out great. Call your taxidermist in your area and ask to be sure.

I think this board is very well moderated. Some of the most heated arguments bring the most information, as long as they are cutoff before they become destructive. I think the moderators on this board are very good at finding the right time to close it down. If you look at criticism in a different ...

Re: I could've killed her!!!!
I guarantee you I will not turn my GSP out away from home without my Tri-Tronics Upland Special with remote control beeper. That e-collar has been worth its weight in gold several times. My dog was trained with it since a pup and she knows exactly what it means. It has stopped deer races and saved h...

Re: My attempt at a Johnny House
Very nice Johnny house. I have one that is very similiar. I had problems with Coyotes and dogs really doing a number on my house. Every night they tried to chew their way in. I finally had to put a solar fence charger on my bird house and fence it in with some hot wires. That did the trick. I also m...

Anytime Im going to be out in the woods during tick season I spray my clothes with Permethrin. The stuff works great. Ive yet to get bit since Ive been useing it. I turkey hunt alot in Georgia in the spring. The deer ticks down there are horrible. I once found like a dozen or more at one time crawli...

Re: just curious
To me a dogs scenting ability is a mysterious thing and is affected by many different things. BrittGSP818 is right on about dogs picking up scent. I think it just takes alot of experience for a dog to know how close they can get. My GSP has a really good nose. I always try to help her when we are wo...

Re: English Setter Pointing?
She will be fine. My last two GSP pups were also pointing quail wings at 7 weeks old. I really never took them out into the world until 10 weeks. I took them to the field on a cord and let them encounter some dizzied quail. So really the first things they saw in this world were birds. They iniatiall...

Re: Kennel Floor Options
Ive used pea gravel for years and it does fine. Put down about 6 inches deep. Yea the dogs sometimes dig, but I just keep it raked down smooth daily when I remove the poop. Wash it down with the hose sometimes and it works great. Any bacteria is washed down into the gravel. Not the case with concret...

My dad bought me a Remington 1100LT-20 back in 1980. Im still carrying it today chaseing Ruffies here in NC. What a great gun. I just made it 5'6 inches in height and have short arms and it still fits me perfect. I put a 21 inch rem-choke barrel on it and it is the perfect grouse gun for me.

Re: Garmin Astro vs Beeper
A beeper, e-collar, and Astro on the same dog? Looks like it would be kinda crowded on the dogs neck. For myself, I never had an e-collar on either dog last season. One collar for the Astro and one for the beeper...no problem on a 41# setter. Supposedly the new Astro collars make it even simpler bu...

Re: Hunting Boot Battle
I have trouble finding boots that wont hurt feet and leave blisters. I walk milles and miles every year and the best boot Ive found is the Danner Pronghorn non-insulated. They are comfortable, have never hurt my feet and have never leaked. The pair I have now is 2 years old and still in good shape. ...
