I have a couple of phez hunts so far this year with LL Beans gortex upland. Love them so far. Leave next week for two camps and 9 days of hunting in SD, we'll see how they hold up but see no reason why they wouldn't.

Wems, what boots do you use? My springer gets a thorn or two now and again. I've thought about boots. Did it take long for them to get used to them?

My 5yr old springer had the same issue, he is now collar conditioned and with a beep of the collar he stops and starts back to me. I haven't had to correct him so far. He is on the soft side so the beep is all that is needed.

If you do go the force fetch route, you may want someone else do it. Since there is some pain associated to the training the dog might not look at you the same way if you do it yourself. I have heard of trainers swapping dogs so they don't force fetch their own.
