Re: Early morning training session
I can see where Ezzy is coming from. I have been overly excited and chased birds for longer than I should have with my pup when it probably would have been best to call it a day. However, dogs get excited by making their excited owners happy, and that excitement will have you driving 7 hours to anot...

Re: stops on scent , but wont point
I sent my Vizsla to a trainer when she was young and she did terribly. Honestly, she was the worst out of all the dogs that I saw the trainer work with. Looking back on it I would have waited till she was older. She would sit and point birds, and lacked intensity. It sounds familiar to what you are ...

Proudag08 - Take a look over at - -http://texasgundogclub.com/forum/ It's a great site to find others to train with/hunting with/buy birds whatever. I have done all of those things through that forum. A decent amount of us are around the DFW area and we get together fairly often. I even learned how ...

Re: Trying to keep my wife happy
I was able to talk my girlfriend into getting a dog because she thought vizsla puppies were cute. A common trait of vizsla's and one of our main reasons for us getting one is because they don't shed much. I wouldn't think they would be that great at duck hunting, but they are awesome pheasant dogs. ...

Re: Recall Pen?
How long could you expect to keep quail in a recall pen and still have them be good fliers? Where I train my dog I cannot shoot the birds for her, so I would be constantly re-using the same quail. Is getting the quail out every few days to fly enough to keep them flying well? I have just about given...

Re: Young dog and trained dog hunt ?
A trainer that I used recommended that I run my dog by herself for her entire first hunting season. Another trainer that helps me out runs his youngest dogs first, then works the older ones.

Re: Getting my dog to hunt father away from me
My Vizsla is a few months older than yours. I am now noticing her getting more and more confidence and starting to run bigger and much faster. She just turned a year old. I mentioned this same concern to a trainer friend of mine and he said we could try planting a couple birds a few 100 yards out, a...

Re: Send the dog to a trainer?
I had some of the same concerns with my Vizsla before I sent her off for a month of puppy training. I think Vizsla's and Brittney's have pretty similar temperaments. Prior to going to camp my dog had slept in our bed every night too. My dog did fine, and she ate well the whole time she was there. Wh...

Re: "WHOA!" Training
My pup has picked up on Whoa extremely fast. I started out with telling her whoa on a leash. When she got the idea that whoa means stop, I then took her off the leash. I will tell my dog to whoa out in a field, and then walk circles around her and walk far away from her, hide from her if I can, and ...

Re: Beginners tips to training new bird dog!?
As someone that is also new to training a bird dog I have had good success with pigeons. I typically hunt quail and I started out using pen raised quail, but they can be difficult to handle and they do not always fly well.

Re: Ooops, Pointer pup ate dove
If I grab my pup by the loose skin in front of her hind legs and pull up on it she will drop anything that is in her mouth. At least she is interested in the bird! With my very limited experience I have seen pointers do this same thing more so than the other dogs I have hunted with. Could have just ...

Re: Tritronics Stimulation Level
I have a similar issue with my TT collar, but each level has a low, medium, and high setting. I end up with 18 levels of stimulation rather than 6. One low will not affect my dog, but 2 low makes her jump off the ground. Having 18 levels is really nice to find a sweet spot with the collar. The colla...

Not sure yet Jonesy. I have just been working her with a couple birds at a time from launchers 2 times a week. I'll try to see within the next week what she does with loose planted birds.

Re: Pointing help
I was actually having a similar problem a few weeks ago with my Vizsla. She has no problem finding birds, but she would not stop to point them. I was really concerned because I had recently gotten her back from hunt camp. I picked up a couple launchers and started using some pigeons with her because...

Re: Vizsla Not Pointing Birds
blanked - I had planted some pen raised quail the first day.
My main concern for her not pointing was due to the fact that she just got back from a month at hunt camp. I think she went to early... I just need to be patient. I think she will figure it out soon enough.

Hey Snips, after you release the bird do you let the dog chase it or do you typically keep them on a CC?

Re: Best hunting dog?
I have hunted upland game birds behind a few Brittney's, a few GSP's, English Pointer, and a Vizsla. I would rank them in the order Brittney's have consistently been the best, GSP are great versatile dogs, English Pointers can point like machines, and Vizsla are versatile. I ended up buying the dog ...

Re: Vizsla Not Pointing Birds
I took her out this weekend and she did not point or find the first couple birds. I popped the birds around when she got within about 10 feet. She gets really excited when she sees them flying, but there was no wind and she was having a difficult time finding the birds at first. I let her chase and ...

Re: Vizsla Not Pointing Birds
About the baseball... I play fetch with her everyday at a local park where she can run off lease and I can work on some basic obedience. The baseball is her favorite toy. When I hold the ball up as I am getting ready to throw it she will go into a staunch point until I release the ball. If I were to...

Re: Vizsla Not Pointing Birds
I plan on buying a couple bird launchers to try them out on her. I will leave the whoa breaking for my trainer next year, and I'll work on my patience this year.
I'll report back to this thread within the next couple weeks to see how she is progressing with the bird launchers.

Vizsla Not Pointing Birds
This is my first hunting dog that I have owned. I have hunted with a lot of other dogs, but this is the first Vizsla. She is 10 months old, and went to a month long hunting camp at 7 months. She did ok the couple times I watched her with the trainer. She never really hit a hard point. I took her out...
