Re: Reason for Quail/Pheasant Decrease
Ezzy[/quote] Galliformes are the invisible order of birds. They are seldom noticed until they are gone. Anyone who hunts, field trials, or watches nature should belong to a bird conservation organization, in my opinion. Audubon is actually the organization that pushed Colinus virginianus into the na...

Re: Reason for Quail/Pheasant Decrease
In Texas (my region anyway), a lot of the decrease can be placed on climate. Quail, like most other wildlife, are sooo dependent on water (good forage, good reproduction, adequate shelter all depend on precip) and I'm in a failry arid region so moisture really makes us or breaks us each and every ye...

Re:
I can't vote since the worst predator isn't listed. The worst in my opinion is the feral house cat or commonly called the ditch tiger. They do more damage to the bird population from song birds up to quail and pheasants. Ezzy This is soooo true! I cannot say that I believe there is a "worst" predat...

Re: Getting Involved in FT
As a follow-up question, what are some ideas on getting dogs accustomed to lots of distractions and activities prior to taking them out for "the real deal"? I am familiar with ways to get dogs used to lots of commotion in relation to obedience training, but couldn't come up with much that I thought ...

Re: Cleaning Saddles
Seems olive oil is is so good because of its purity- a good clean, natural oil that is easily and totally absorbed into the leather. If you start looking around, olive oil is also a very common ingredient in many "beauty" products like moisturizing facial soaps, creams, and lotions...good for living...

Re: Opinions on saddle
I am not very familiar with the brands mentioned, but from what I can tell from this and other posts maybe an Aussie stock saddle or an endurance saddle would suit your needs. My input is simply that some of the saddle makers I am more familiar with (makers of Eventing, Jumping, Hunters and Dressage...

Re: Cleaning Saddles
I'm a long-time equestrian- been into horses longer than gun dogs...I would honestly reccomend ditching the neatsfoot and even the Lexol (as a conditioner; for cleaning it's great) and go to good old OLIVE OIL. Neatsfoot is not as kind to the leather as olive oil is- ever notice those fine cracks? A...

Getting Involved in FT
I'm a new member to this forum, and and also new to developing a hunting dog. We've been working with our young GSP Ruger (about 9 months old) at our local bird dog club over quail and he's progressing really well. He came into our family to be a hunter, but we are extremely interested in becoming i...

Re: "Impressive" lineage, GSP
Thanks guys. My husband and I rescued a GSP, but he was AKC and all. We registered him and got his pedigree- lots of "Impressive"s on the dam's (Yankee's Impressive Abbigail) side. He's proving to be a seemingly excellent pup! Eager to please, sharp as a tack- holding point and retrieving at ~9 mont...

"Impressive" lineage, GSP
I have come across quite a few GSPs with "Impressive" in their bloodlines, but my searches for info specifically on that one turns up nothing; anybody have any insight? Would love to find out more.
