Re: First time at a NAVHDA training day...likes/dislikes

- Several people recommended starting collar conditioning on my pup. Maybe this should be in the other category since he's so young?? It doesn't do any harm to put one on a young pup. I wouldn't turn it on until he's a year old. Years ago, I had a Brittany and she never needed a shock. She was sensi...

Re: Let's Try this Again...Pointer Questions

My pointers do not like water. Tried luring them into a shallow creek when they were 6 months old in July, for a few days a week for the month. Walked all the way across and they went off hunting by themselves. A friend of mine told me a story about his grandfather's pointer: As the hunter crossed a...

Re: English Cocker - American Water Spaniel or both

Thanks to all. That dog does heel, but gets distracted. I stopped putting him in a harness to road him (by foot and hand). He was 6 months old when he pulled me down the front steps -- a cat was napping under a hydrangea by the steps. Thanks for all the obedience remarks, too -- especially the you c...

Re: English Cocker - American Water Spaniel or both

I think they would be easier on my body to train, walk and cheaper to feed too! I'm not sure they will be easier on your body. I've seen both types of dogs trained and am training both types currently. I think they are about the same, except I throw more dummies for my spaniel. There's more to livi...

Any suggestions on breeders? I heard good things about Oahe (sp?) kennels, but noone that I know had any pups from them

English Cocker - American Water Spaniel or both

Hi, I've currently got 2 pointers over 10 years old (they haven't slowed down any, if anything run harder than ever, but for only 60-90 minutes at a time). I'm getting a little old (65) to keep up with them or road them to keep them in shape (rotator cuff tendinitis). So, if they pass on before I do...

Re: A light collar?

The sport basic collar was very snug. (I have 2 dogs, one got level 3 when trained). She wore the collar for about 5 weeks before I turned it on. During this time we were practicing turning with a whistle signal on a long check cord. When she yelped, still on the check cord I kept whistling and turn...

A light collar?

I have a pup who yelps when I nick her with a tritronics collar set on 1. I tried it on my arm and I cannot feel it. On my neck it's not bad at all.

Can anyone suggest a collar with lower intensity? Maybe she needs a trainer who can feel the shocks?

Re: Words of Wisdom

Dogs, like humans, have bad days. Some days it's best to just bring him home or put him back in the kennel.
