Re: Mast Cell Tumors
What is the location of the Tumors? I have also lost a good dog to mast cell cancer. Make sure your vet is certain he can get wide margins around the Tumors, like a full centimeter or more all the way around and deep. If he is uncertain, take him to a specialist. Clean margins is very important. Upo...

Re: Rattlesnake vaccine?
I agree with Bossman, I have seen 4 dogs hit personally and 3 had the shots and one was a pup too young for it. Of the 3 that were vaccinated all that was given right after was a shot of dexemethazone (spelling) and penicellin and a race to the vet, one died but it was a large snake and hit right in...

Re: Comfortis/Frontline Plus/Advantix?
Thanks for the insight, I hate using it but will do as you suggest, put it on at night and keep them apart the next day. Question on Frontline Plus (or any other topical flea/tick treatments) if a dog is chewing on his legs/feet due to being itchy, and the dog has had a Frontline application, is the...

Comfortis/Frontline Plus/Advantix?
ok, have an 11 year old lab, also have a 2 year old daughter, they are best buddies and i hate seperating them for 2 days while the Frontline plus is soaking in. Comfortis safe for old dogs? Ticks not an issue, too hot in the summer here to go to where ticks live. Fleas are an issue in a field i run...

Re: Discourage marking and unwanted male behaviors?
I agree--probably a bad example on my part. I think the marking can be discouraged, I know it can be discouraged on some things, not sure about all the time all things. Good luck with the pup

Re: Discourage marking and unwanted male behaviors?
That is a good point, I dont trial dogs. When I bird hunt, I sure dont mind it if the pointers want to run around, poop, hike and do their thing before taking off. But i do see where it could be annoying in a trial situation. In my situation, I have an old retired retriever, makes my day to see him ...

Re: Discourage marking and unwanted male behaviors?
wow, never knew outdoor marking was such an issue with male dog owners. Just housebreak the dog and tell him no when he hikes his leg on outdoor items you dont want. Not that big of a deal, or at least for me. My male is Lab is getting up there in age, I could care less what or where he marks as lon...
Re: Racoon's
To answer your question, no my dog doesnt point them (he is a lab). But my old Lab has faught and killed many many coons over the years. I wish i had broke him off coons when he was young, but once they learn to fight a coon look out.... I dont guess he is any worse for the wear other than split ear...

Re: Loose Stools
pro-biotics did wonders for my old lab, always had a sensitive stomach for 10.5 years, started him on bac-pak plus 4 months ago and he hasnt had a loose stool since. I swear by that stuff (and i am not easily sold on "snake oil") this stuff worked for my dog.

Re: Sprained front wrist
Thank you all, he has been tested for Lyme a few months back during a general work up, snap test i think they called it. Negative. Anyway, he is fine now, ran him a little this weekend and he has been good since last Tuesday. I think just an old dog that had a hard hunting life, old sprain that acts...

Re: Sprained front wrist
Thanks all, he hasnt been limping since Tuesday afternoon, so it looks like he is good to go again. I think he just tweaks an old injury from time to time, might be arthritis setting in. Either way, he seems to be good to go now, will take it easy and let him walk/trot around in a field this weekend.

Re: Sprained front wrist
thanks for the info but i am looking for real world experiences, this is not something warranting surgery, no wimpering, no whining, not licking it or pulling at it. Just an old dog with a sprained wrist, anyone have an experience with this, and if so how long for the dog to lay off of it? My concer...

Sprained front wrist
Treatments for dog with sprained front wrist? He can put weight on it but walks with a limp for past couple days, if he sees a squirrel he is off like it doesnt bother him however. He does this about once or twice a year, i think it is an old injury that he tweeks every now and then. Some times i wi...

Re: Shorthair pics and brag
Please keep me updated on his transition to pointing--I am going to track this because I might be doing what you are with my next dog. I am also in TX, and enjoy hunting dove and ducks as much as i do quail--not to mention quail are getting harder to find! Would love to have a dog do both, retriever...

Re: Shorthair pics and brag
Is it hard to teach a pointing breed to stick by your side in the dove field rather than be out hunting the fields? I know GSP's are versatile, but i always love it when a pointing breed is a good dove/duck dog. Heck it is hard enought to get a young lab to sit still, but it must be a different anim...

I 2nd the antlers--i pick them up from the ranch and bring them home and have keep one in the house and one in the yard. Word of caution on hard wood floors---if he drops it in the middle of the night, you will wake up!

Update---took him back to the vet today for blood work, his packed cell volume was a 44! Vet said the first test was just a bad one, like Doc mentioned below possible some rbc's stuck to side of tube when sent to pathologist etc. Anyway, i had them spin it twice in the vets office, and two vets look...

Re: older lab slighlty anemic?
Dog Dr.--- I appreciate your time on this. I sure dont like 1. 2. or 3.! Dog seems fine, but has been slowing down from what i thought was age. I am a little gun shy these days, I just buried my other dog a month ago who just turned 6, mast cell cancer got her..... On these ranges for HCT, does 34% ...

older lab slighlty anemic?
New to this forum, you guys sure do have a wealth of knowlege, thanks for allowing me! I have a healthy 10.5 year old chocolate lab, at his annual appointment I suggested we do a full blood work up, so we did and sent it off for full pathology report. All functions came back great with the exception...
