Ed,
I might be interested. I live in Yakima but am over Tri-Cities way quite often.

Re: Pigeons
I have a pigeon trap but have had no success in capturing any pigeons. I put out chicken scratch around the entrance and in the trap, but they don't go in. I have been putting it on the ground in barns with pigeon infestations. Any ideas?

You would know the difference between a Ruffed and Sage grouse just on the size alone....Sage grouse are HUGE.

I have always had good results with Frontline Plus. I think this year is going to be especially bad for ticks with all the spring precip we've had.

Re: What would you do in this situation?
What i would like to know from the OP is when you give the command WHOA from over 30 yards away do you want the dog to stay put even if the bird runs? are you trying to not allow the dog to relocate on birds on her own until released?....ruth Ideally, I would like her to relocate birds, but right n...

What would you do in this situation?
Hypothetical: You have a young GSP who is still learning patience. While out hunting one day, off the CC, she points a bird (it's a pheasant, but you don't know that yet). You yell "woah" and she holds, but as you approach with 30 yards to go, she flushes the bird. My question is: Do you shoot or no...

Re: "THE GREEN THING"
None of the happy conditions in the OP are obsolete. The fact that they are not as prevelant today speaks mostly to the market and supply and demand. I for one would LOVE to reuse every bit of packaging, and for everyone to tear out their lawns and plant vegetable gardens. I think our grandparents a...

Re: Differences between pointers and GSP's
Right! GSP's and their owners tend to be hard workers, while pointers and their owners always seem to be on vacation.Grouse Dog Guy wrote:The big difference is the people that own them, GSP owners develop a personalty much like their dogs while pointer people just field trial and hunt birds.

Great footage. I have only ever seen a Sharp-tailed lek from the air when we survey for them. It's a lot cooler your way, rather than at 90 mph at 150 ft!

Hey, thanks everyone!
There is a ton of great advice to follow and think about here. We plan on hunting every day that we can this season, so she will get a lot of chasing done.

Re: Is it me or the dog?
Never mind the pointing. She comes downwind and indicates scent of the bird pop the launcher. She is waiting for the excitement of the visual cue and the catch which you have programmed her for. You need to reprogram her that the scent is definitive proof of the existence of a bird. At this point y...

Is it me or the dog?
My 6 mo old GSP is doing fine with finding the live pigeons I put in the brush for her. I began tying 1 or 2 to shrubs on the advice of my brother-in-law, and then tying a cardboard card to the foot on some advice I saw somewhere here on the forum. Ruby has no problem finding these because as soon a...

I have some pigeons. I can't breed them because I rent, so can't build a large loft, but have rigged up a small mew out of some apple bins. What kind of birds were you hoping for?tcjack wrote:do you have acess to birds?

Sapper, It looks as though I am in the same position you were in last Dec. Are you still interested in getting together with folks in the Yakima area? I am in Naches, have a 6 mo GSP that I am training myself with a couple books, DVDs and faith in good breeding. I have been having a hard time findin...

My name is Chris, I'm 34 and the owner of a 6 mo old GSP. I live and work on the east side of the mountains in Yakima, WA. I am a biologist for a independent enviro consulting firm, and my pup gets to come to work with me almost all of the time. This year will be my first season hunting birds, as we...
