Beeper or Bell?
After this past weekend of hunting, I have been toying around with the idea of getting a Beeper collar for the dogs when out hunting. Does anyone out there have a preference of Bell over Beeper? .. or a specific brand of add-on that folks like best? The $130 dollar SportDOG version is remote operate...

Re: I don't NEED another dog!
I bred my 6 year old female and she whelped a healthy litter of 6. No c-section. No issues. She has enough milk for twice as many pups. I wouldn't think 7 is too old. It might concern me that it would be her first litter... In my experience younger females make better mothers. ANYWAY; on the puppy -...

Re: training older dogs
I fixed a gun shy dog by firing a blank pistol when he was doing things that made him crazy. I instantly stopped trying to associate it to birds, and simply tried to associate it to 'fun'. My dogs love to run with the ATV, so what I started doing was revving it up, they'd all scream/bark and jump in...

This dog was a give away that I've been working on. He was gun shy and lacked run.
Bond with that Setter, and I bet he makes you a fine grouse dog.

Yesterday we went out with a group of 5 guys at trophy mountain hunt club. We used Marco as one of our finishing dogs on a guided hunt for Nick's birthday. We were out about 5 hours. We brought home our limit yesterday. Highlight of the morning was the dog pointing a pretty good sized gobbler. They are out of season, but we all got a laugh from it. Even the little guy had a good time. He was the honorary bird holder (his choice!). :) http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx228/Quai...

You know, I risk a lot of hate speech saying this.. but this breed is really a simple one. I used to have Chows - the junk yard kind. Much more complicated. I'd run them in a pack.. usually 5 at a time or so. I have 8 Pointers, all intact, all run together. We have what we call a 'Chow dog challenge...

As long as you are certain she is not ill, I would be the first to say she is bonding with your other dog. You are OK, but she finds the constant companionship of the other dog so much more FUN. Starve her for attention and make sure that the best part of play time is with YOU.

Good job! :D Very impressive progress. Steady him up :D Start like you would a puppy - checkcord etc. Just remember to keep quiet and don't nag. Thank you. I am not exactly happy that he's bumping birds.. but he's not catching them. Hasn't done so in over a year. We bumped this same bird 3 times, and then it crossed the creek to the cow pasture. On that note, I put him back in the truck.RoostersMom wrote:What an improvement! Way to go.

I never realized ..... A dog I'm developing does this nearly every time he encounters a bird. My husband hates it and says he is running in... which in fact he is *not* doing. I have found that running dogs in a packs makes the good ones more *competitive* with other dogs, but, does not bring out any special qualities that they don't already posses. If they're not bold, they're not bold. Period.

Ok, been in this situation before.. I haven't 'cured' it, but I'm at least back where we started. First, I was given a dog as a birdy yearling. Sounds like you may have a dog with a very low pain tolerance. Usually you want a hard driving dog of the exact opposite for a hunting situation, but not all is lost. I'm sure you have already, but put that ecollar on him (DEAD!) and let him wear it around all over the place. It's not a bad device, ...

No, he ranges about 30 to 40 yards or so. More when you fire him up. He seldom ranges out of eyesight. This was the end of the training, and he is smart to the bird bag. I carry one and sometimes would pull out a bird and showing it to him, then releasing it. .. so he sees bird bag and anticipates a...

The dog's reward is his steadiness. The thrill is in the stalk.. or 'point'. The excitement is in the flush and chase. What enjoyment would the dog get from a gun shot? Don't put human equivalents to canine emotions. The shot is the hunter's reward - one that he has to earn.

This will not work for everyone, but, it's my method. The rule is - don't shoot over a dog until it is pointing the pigeon in a pop-box, and you can walk up and put a food on it.
