Re: Puppy training question
I think what you are looking for is does the reprimand cause an issue for training later down the road . If the dog is responding to songbirds you don't need to encourage it and can just ignore it . The dog will soon learn through training what birds are their objective . And will generally ignore s...

Re: How old is too old to Socialize?
It sounds to me that your dog is socialized to people . Unless your talking about aggression towards people . Socialization deals with getting to see anything it comes into contact with as being safe for the dog to be near. Dogs view there world using instinct to see things as being safe or dangerou...

Sounds like the dog has energy to play with other dog just not the owner. Consider the teeth , maybe the dog is getting its adult teeth. If you are losing patience you may have turned the dog away from you. Dogs will avoid playing the game if it facilitates avoiding a correction. Read the book cultu...

To put this in perspective the op says the dog understands the word no. At this point if there is no consequence to a command of no, then the word is actually meaningless. If you say no and do not correct, the dog gets no benefit from you saying it. The more you use the word no with no correction th...
Re: Pressure
You state the dog is trained to flush on command and then you state the dog is not steady in the field. One would assume if the dog is trained to flush on command it would first have to stand through the shot. If the dog had been previously been standing through the shot and is now anticipating the ...

Clicker training is unique in that it is a system of communication with the dog, separate from the reward, that connects the act of a behavior with the reward. This is how mis-communication begins. A clicker is a tool that can be used to communicate a message, but is not a system of training. It's ...

I think every one gave you sound advice here. By using target training y...

Dogs thrive on consistency . Get sloppy with yours and the dog will follow. If the dog is responding to a command 80 percent of the time you can be sure it understands the command. At this point if the dog is non compliant you need to correct the dog once. The level of stimulation should be signific...

As for the original question . Throwing the quail would be fine. Allowing the dog to find and chase is problematic. Pigeons are cheaper and I think will withstand the abuse a little longer. I thought understanding the big picture was really where you needed help.
Re: Gun Intro

If you throw a bumper rubbed with hot dog for the dog and the dog runs out and licks it, you just trained the dog to run out and lick it. Don't waste your time just go straight to force fetch. I agree with the idea of using a vibrate feature as opposed to using stimulation. An inherent behavioral trait in dogs is that they learn to anticipate what is coming next by the cues that are given to them , wether those cues are intentional or not. The dog will know it is food time based on your a...
