Re: When Whoa training is it ok to keep working on other drills
I like to work on one command at a time. I also start whoa with the heel command than transition to whoa. I do like to mix it up with free running or check cording into birds every couple days. It help to keep the dog from being "sticky" and not wanting to go away from you. If you walk around whoain...

Re: Pigeon Question
Look at some of the roller pigeon sites. They often fly them in shows ect and have a kite loft that is portable. I personaly have not tried this but there are some postings and articles on the topic around.

Re: for the field trial crowd......
I'll be cheering for the Erin's breed pointers. Personally like Kentucky gambler.
Hope they all Finish well. 2 hrs of running against some of the best around is
A lot of pressure.

Re: Launchers and scenting
I would consider placing a scent bird under a kick trap or using a lock wing pigeon. Than set your launcher About ten feet away from your scent bird. Sweep the scent bird around than plant it Out of sight. Bring the dog down wind and across the scent cone. Scent conditions are very important. Some d...

Upland training drills for flushing dogs
Guys I am familiar with pointing dog training but not so much with flushing dog drills.
I would like to have some training drill set up ideas for bird work.
Any info and tips welcome.

Re: messed up on "whoa"
I also use Hickock's method. Have you been running the dog with a check chord half hitched around the waist collar on neck and collar on waist? After intro to birds in the field , your field work so be a fly away drill. Using the check cord on the flank to try to walk in front of your dog twitching ...

Re: Bird release without a launcher.
i have had success using a baby sock as a hood attached to a length of kite string. just pull the string and the bird will flush. the more you expose your pigeons to this game the more the better theyu flush. don't dizzy the bird..

Re: Not Pointing Grouse
What breed and how old is you dog. It will come in time. May want keep him off the ditch parots for a while. They tend to let the dog crowd in close and grouse usually don't tolerate that much pressure. Do you hunt him with a beeper collar. If not introduce one. It will tell you if he is flash point...
