You must have a registered dog to run in NSTRA. The field trials are not to extend the season and have fun with your bird dog, they're a science experiment.

Disagree. There are tons of Brittanys that given the chance will and have become excellent wild bird dogs.

Pup's early progress
I bought a new puppy. He is well bred and was born 1-24-13. So far I've got him: Coming to the whistle for treats. Hunting for birds i.e. birdy. Sound conditioned. Retrieving. This weekend he held steady on two different pigeons in a launcher long enough for me to walk about 30 and 40 yards respecti...

It might be wise to go back to "here", "heel", "sit" if these commands are not rock solid yet. If you're only 15, asking questions and willing to try, you're ahead of the game.

Just my two cents, Scott, before launcher work the pup should have been introduced to birds (and like them) and introduced to the launcher. I launch tennis balls out of it in the back yard a few times. You don't want the dog concerned about the sound the launcher makes when it's time to train. Once ...

If you can train the dog to flush without trying to bite at the bird please let me know.....I hate pen raised birds. twice a day with a young pup you can blow the whistle, give a small treat. my two cents, get a toy cap gun and when pup is in full chase after a bird and a good distance away fire it. shoot closer slowly when pup doesn't care about the sound. 4 months, imo, is a good time to start sound conditioning which can be taught at the same time as the first few birds.....
