You must have a registered dog to run in NSTRA. The field trials are not to extend the season and have fun with your bird dog, they're a science experiment.

3-5 months an beyond, birds gun intro i teach "here" with treats but don't force compliance as soon as they come home....you start forcing compliance during yard work and they already will know the command, 4 months until he's steady enough to walk 50 yards and in front of him, pigeons in a launcher...

my two cents, get a toy cap gun and when pup is in full chase after a bird and a good distance away fire it. shoot closer slowly when pup doesn't care about the sound. 4 months, imo, is a good time to start sound conditioning which can be taught at the same time as the first few birds.....

Hunting has not caused the decline in quail numbers. So the biologist in the article says....and others. In fact people who hunt quail have done more to help bird numbers than any other group through habitat enhancement and research $$$. We can debate to no end what is causing the problems...i think...

I haven't tried this but I know it will work. Go to a place where some old lady has feed and tamed up pretty good. Stand there and feed em with a big cast net, like the ones used for catching bait fish, and chunk it over those suckers. You could even stand behind a piling of a bridge at an overpass....

There is one trait that makes a good NSTRA dog....bird finding ability. It also helps to have a fast dog that covers the field 5 times in 30 minutes.
