Re: Tri-Tronic Sport Basic G3 - Replacement Recommendations
Thanks for the replies. I ordered a cyber Monday deal on a Garmin Tritronics Sport Pro. From what I read, it is very similar to what I had in the Sport Basic G3 - we’ll see. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll move up to the 550. Thanks for the info on repair. I’ll probably send in my G3 and somewhere I’ve...

Tri-Tronic Sport Basic G3 - Replacement Recommendations
I have an old and completely worn out Tri-Tronic Sport Basic G3 collar/remote and it has given up the ghost - owes me nothing. There are a dizzying array of new collars out there; Tri-Tronics is history. Can someone please help me pic a suitable replacement? Grouse hunting in the western mountains o...

Re: From VA to Where??? Hunting Advice Needed!!
you will have about 2 weeks of woodcock season left, and the birds should be plentiful. I was out yesterday for the first day of the second season and moved 8 birds in about 2 hours. they are holding real tight, but my dog had a great day and did good. let me know where in va you are and maybe i co...

Re: From VA to Where??? Hunting Advice Needed!!
Update: Looks like my dog (and me) will be ready for a hunt the week between Christmas and New Years Day. So I'm wondering what my options are for both grouse and potentially quail. I'm only interested in wild birds, which rules out some hunting venues within easy striking distance from near my neck...

Re: From VA to Where??? Hunting Advice Needed!!
My WPG came from Scripture Kennels in MN.Cptmorgan177 wrote:I live in E. TN and have WPG also. I am going to western NC to Grouse hunt this year. I have heard some really good reports from people early walking this year.
Who did you get your Griffon from?
Thanks,

From VA to Where??? Hunting Advice Needed!!
I've got my WPG in training and she is scheduled to be finished-up first week in January. I'm in western/central VA and quail are no where to be found in the wild and grouse are almost as scarce. This dog is primarily a family/house dog and the bird aspect is simply a nod to me and my wish to bird h...

Grouse Question
A buddy of mine was hunting grouse with me and my dog and we spotted a wild flush a goodly way in the distance. The trajectory looked like a grouse, but in the second I saw the bird, it looked like the color was grey/blue. My friend said there were blue and red grouse. I never of this. For this trip...

Briars vs. Clothes
Don't know if this is the right forum - but I have a question about briars vs clothes.
What type of briar resistant clothes are you folks wearing when grouse hunting in dense brush/briars? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: 12 or 20?
My Dad used a 16 ga double, he still has it. When I was a teenager, he an I went out to buy a 16 ga double for me and found at our price range, they were no longer available, so I settled for a 20 ga double. I still have that gun, though the extractors need work and I don't use it anymore. Later in ...

20 ga Choke & Load Recommendations for Grouse & Quail
I picked-up a black friday deal on a 20ga Mossberg 500 today. I'll give it a workout and then hand it off to my 16 yr old to use going forward from there. The gun has three chokes, full, modified and improved cylinder. My question is - for a 20 ga, what choke and load do you prefer for grouse and qu...

Re: Tritronics Bark Limiter Questions
OK - I'll keep at 3 and see how it goes. I struggle to find the line between don't be to harsh on your dog as these WPG's are soft (as are setters, brittanys, etc.), yet enforce some rules and establishing my role as the "alpha" dog in her life vs the other way around. This WPG experience has been a...

Tritronics Bark Limiter Questions
OK - my dog barks like crazy when outside. Barks at everything, birds, bikes, shadows, the sun and moon. I bought a Tritronics Bark Limiter collar and put it on, set it at 1 and 2 with pretty much no effect - when she feels the need to strongly bark - like when she see a cat, someone walk down the s...

Re: Dog Poop Question
Update: Dog is much better. We cut back on her food or more like laid down the law to our kids to not be feeding her food when the bowl is empty and we are not around and no more snacks on the side - like potato chips, etc. when mom and dad are not looking. Who knows how much that dog has been eatin...

Re: Dog Poop Question
Bill, How much food are you feeding her each meal? Do you measure? What brand / formula of food are you feeding? I would cut back on the food by 10% for a few days and see if she has more solid stools. You can also take a fresh stool sample to the vet to check for parasites etc. You won't pay an of...

Re: Dog Poop Question
No blood in the stool - just soft (not runny), smelly and maybe some mucus - which I gather is the clear stuff. We definately take her out very late in the evenings for one last time before bed. She pooped twice last night. Once on our floor and once in her crate - all of this between midnight and 5...

Dog Poop Question
My WPG is now 9 months old. She has been wonderfully house broken, but in the last week, she has pooped in the house several times. It ain't runny, but it ain't solid - sort of something in between - and smelly. I've also notices some clear looking solid-ish stuff in the poop too. We don't give her ...

Tick War is On! Questions
Took my dog out for a run and picked 3 ticks off her this morning. We are using K9 Advantix and maybe it helps, but what else should we be doing? Once we expose the dog to tick infested areas - which is hard to avoid in my neck of the woods, should we be doing some kind of short term application of ...

Who Needs Quail for Training When You Have a Fly
My fine WPG is busy hunting here in the den tonight. It's warming-up in around here and the first fly made it's way into the house and buzzed by her head. For the past 15 minutes, she is intensenly hunting for the fly. Tail wagging, pointing, sniffing out every nook and corner int he room, pointing ...

Raising Quail Chicks 101 Questions
I have a chance to buy some newly hatched quail and the price is much less than buying full grown birds. I use quail for my dog training. Re: How Does Your Dog Point?
All of my dogs get trained to stop to flush and to be steady on birds, but there is not stretch of imagination possible where I would call that "pointing". So no, dogs do not sight point when they see birds in the air. I would be very skeptical about the idea that your old setter was roading till s...

How Does Your Dog Point?
Other than with it's nose ;) My old setter use to get wind of a bird (usually a quail or grouse) and start following it. It would follow that scent until (I believe) it saw the bird and then lock-up on an instant point. If the bird moved, it would move with it - stopping as the bird stopped. Usually...

Re: Quick Crate Size Question
Yes the dog can get in, stand-up, turn around and lay down. It's just about on the border of being maxed out in that department.
Just courious how much larger the crate needs to be than the dog.
Thanks!
Bill

Quick Crate Size Question
The crate we have for our pup was to large when we got it and being a pup, it would frequently pee and sometimes poop in the crate. Now the pup is about 3 months old and has grown so that she fills out the crate and we need to get a larger one soon. The thing is - when the pup had extra space, she w...

GSP - Why So Popular?
I have been scanning posts and looking at some dogs listed for sale and even in my neck of the woods, it seems that the German Shorthaired Pointer is a very popular dog. What sets these dogs apart from others that make it so desirable? I assume they are great quail dogs, what about grouse? How are t...

I have been considering another Llewellin setter, however, I am not to keen on the sheading of hair all o...
