Seeking your recommendations re: which training book

I have had Labs for the last 40 years or so and am wanting to get a GSP or GWP.
Which book(s) would you recommend as the best re: training a GSP?

Re: Guns Online?

Yes, have purchased many rifles, handguns, and shotguns online all with good results so far, knock on wood. The key is to know what you want and to know that item well and to know what it is worth to you. Many online offerings have been 'customized', a nice way of saying screwed around with by previ...

Nike,
I actually did laugh out loud at your response. :D I was just thinking how much I might enjoy hunting over a back yard pond or mowed corn field.. someday I hope to find out! Until then, lots of gasping for air and swearing for me.

While I don't feel qualified to address the original question asked, I would like to point out, as the thread had drifted in this direction, that for some of us retrieving is essential , not a nicety. Spectacular.
It would be astounding enough on its own, but with your family provenance attached to it.. it truly becomes priceless. Thanks very much both for the pic and the story.

Not very fair of me as I don't own any, but if you're willing to share a pic of yours I bet I would not be the only one to enjoy it. 8)

Special request: Dave can you post a close up pic of that beautiful LC Smith? I drooled all over my keyboard when I saw it in the Grouse thread.

Re: Suggestions for a first shotgun?

Raider, The Wingmaster, first produced in 1950, was intended from its inception to be a production gun to dominate the market as THE affordable American field shotgun. Stamped parts, a relatively simple stock, no hand fitting, etc made manufacturing fast and less expensive. Like I said, not very sex...

Re: Suggestions for a first shotgun?

Here's my 2 cents: Tens of thousands, quite possibly hundreds of thousands, of folks have chosen a pump gun as their first shotgun. Many continue to use them exclusively. They are very simple to operate, generally not finicky as to what goes in them, and operate under an amazing range of conditions....

Training for snakes

Lots of rattle snakes in certain parts of my state (Oregon). These happen to be parts I am very fond of travelling in. While I have never had a problem with the snakes and my dogs I would rather not experience the scenario of a snake-bit dog and me on a 5 day canoe trip with no roads out. What train...

ymepointer, Thanks for the tip. I had a chat with a vet friend of mine last night. She recommended NOT bringing a dog for the very reason you mentioned: LOTS of rattlers. Not sure I can go bird hunting w/o my dog (that's just wrong!) so I think I will spend some time training for snake avoidance pri...

Re: Wood Duck Hunting Info Needed

Your question has been very well answered above, so I'm just chiming in to agree with previous posters. IMO they ARE the best tasting duck by far. Know where they want to be and be there considerably before dawn. As dawn approaches you'll hear the drake scream.. kind of an eery sound.. then lots of ...

Re: Sage grouse

Thanks all for the info, very helpful. Funny thing, the more I research them the more I find that hunters regard their taste as either 1)unfit even for coyotes, or 2)delicious! Sage grouse

I have been interested in trying for them for a few years now. Here in Oregon it's a controlled hunt so you have to put in for a tag and cross your fingers. Season limit is two birds.
Anyone here ever hunt them? Willing to share any tips?

Yes, sausage seems most common. Pepperoni and Summer sausage. But.. I prefer bear pot roasts. A Sping bear can be quite good. Key, I am told, is to kill them before they get into fish at which time they can become not so pleasant to eat. I find removing all the fat from the meat keeps the gamey flav...

Remington Model 31

Any other fans here of Remingtons first side-ejecting pump shotgun? I have several from the mid 30s and I think they are marvels of craftsmanship. First, Hello to all from the green (ie rainy) Willamette Valley of Western Oregon. I have a specific question or 2 re: the GSP, but first a little backgound on me. I hunt over a National level chocolate Lab. We do ducks (of course), quail, chukar, doves, pheasant, and grouse. She lives in the house ...
