Re: Creeping on point question
making the dog stand for a few minutes at 14 mos old seems unnecessary. go in, flush the bird. save that for later until he stops moving after faster flushes.

Re: Is it possible to train a 2 year old Vizsla to hunt?
At 2 yrs old the vizsla is just getting mature enough to figure it out! Mine has been so much slower than our GSP puppy - seems it is that way for most Vs - just a little slower to mature. If it comes from the right lines it's never too late.

They are the same as any other breed - some are good, some are bad. Harder to find a good vizsla imo than a GSP though. Whereas my GSP puppy has no problem going out big already, it took a while for the V to figure it out - and it's still not a guarantee everytime he is down. Sometimes it's 150 yard...

If you trialed exclusively in 1 state - where would it be the hardest to finish a dog?
My vote is for the KS/MO - a lot of those dogs get to see a ton of wild birds which teaches a dog everything.

You're doing the gun wrong - get the Perfect Start and follow it - teaches how to do bird intro with association of shot = falling bird. Just going out and shooting right away is a recipe for a gun shy dog.

I don't think it says those breeds only, just that those are who compete. I think if a GSP qualified by winning at the necessary trials they would let it run, it just hasn't happened.Brazosvalleyvizslas wrote:It specifically says right on Ames website, English Pointers/English Setters not all pointing breeds.

How Much Snow is Too Much?
Finally snowed in CO so might have a chance to get some pheasants tomorrow when I go out. There are 2 places I go, one will have about 6" and one about 3" - would the 6" be better for birds holding or is that too much snow? Or no difference really?

Let it be a puppy. I'd start here & kennel around now and whoa in a few more months. Depending on how birdy your dog is I'd start introducing the shotgun via the Perfect Start method in an open field where it can see everything.
No commands or control on birds for a while or if it's running off.
