Re: My GSP back from trainer malnourished?

The trainer had him for 6 weeks and I can see my dogs spinal cord , most ribs pelvic and shoulder blades...am I over reacting? I hear ya -- I am new to bird dogs myself, but when my GSP came back last Spring, my wife picked him up from the airport and literally thought we got shipped the wrong dog....

Re: Best way to teach a dog to go out

I used the e-collar effectively to solve your problem. I had a dog that had previously been abused. This made her nervous about going too far . A dog that is called in too often will also hang back. Why go far out if you know you are going to be called in again. Timing is everything on this. As soo...

Re: Baiting Water

I have been in multiple situations where I had to force plenty of people to drink water as well, in my line of work. Plenty of folks simply don't have the good sense to realize when they need water - they simply don't know realize simple hydration will improve their sub-par performance in certain si...

Re: Baiting Water

We can't always wait till they want to eat or drink versus instilling in them the desire to eat when it is presented. I agree and this was one of the reasons I asked the original question. Sometimes I worry he is not hrydrating enough -- but also would like him to hydrate when it is convenient and ...

Baiting Water

Have to force my GSP to drink even after hard work -- and then I can usually only get a couple ounces into him. He gets most of his water at meal time mixed with his food. I read a little about baiting water for slow drinkers but couldn't find much of an explanation. I tried an ounce of chicken brot...

Re: How to get started in becoming gun dog trainer as a career

Oh, as a trainer you are not your own boss. You are your own manager, but you have to answer to many bosses (clients). I get your meaning, but by that benchmark - no one is there own boss. Everyone is essentially selling something to someone, right?! But when it is up to you to be successful or not...

Pointer Junior Hunt Test Qual

My GSP, Max, did pretty well at a Hunt Test this weekend – received qualifying runs both Saturday and Sunday in Junior Hunter braces. I was interested to see how he would run with a brace mate but he did fine with it after an initial bit of tail chasing for 50-60 yards. He hunted well, I think, and ...

Re: Training cost

$800 per month around here . . . works out to about 12 hours per month or 67 dollars per hour of auctual hands on training time I think this is missing the boarding itself -- not cheap in and of itself. Boarding around here is $15-20 per day - OR - $450-600 per month WITH NO TRAINING. So I see anyt...

Water Intro

Intro'd my GSP to water over the past week. Knee deep the first outing and he just watched our lab swim out as he anxiously pondered how he might do the same. You could see his brain working - but he dared not go in past his chest. He stretched and stretched but would not leave the ground. On his se...

For what it is worth I don't feel the JH is a waste of time. A professional handler or someone with years of experience may disagree but as new handlers I thought it was a great experience for us. It gave us additional opportunities to run our dog with lots of people in the field as well as another...

Sad . . . I adopted my GSP buddy from a rescue shelter when he was about 6 months old. That was a little over 2 years ago. I agree with a lot of the sentiments related already -- I was really overwhelmed with the scrutiny I underwent to adopt him and was nearly ready to walk away from it all. I am g...

In the same vain . . . why does it seem the the well-bred setters cost so much more than similarly well bred pointers and GSPs? This may not be the norm -- may just be what I have seen lately. Re: SxS shotguns... why?

I carry a classic Stevens Mod 311 Side-by-Side 20 Ga -- just a few hundred dollars invested for a nice small field gun I can hike through thick cover with for miles -- considerably lighter than my 870 and far cheaper than most O/U. I really enjoy the feel of it and it looks nice too - IMO.

:?: Is it common for dogs to whelp just a single pup? I have never bred dogs, just assumed there were always multiple dogs in a litter. Do you still call it a litter when it is just one?

Just curious -- trying to learn what I can -- Thanks.

Re: Can we plant bird, false shoot and retrieve cold birds

If you clip the wings or card him, you can shoot a blank and 'hit' him everytime after he flushes. The bird will drop everytime and your pup can make a retrieve of the live, reusable, bird.

Regards and good luck.

I have considered several Baikal O/Us and will likely pick one up in the near term. I believe some of the woodwork is very nice – especially the darker walnuts. I am considering getting a pair of these as well but haven't committed yet -- like to know how well they work. For the $100, it seems worth the gamble, if they work even reasonably well.
