Re: Attention Deficit Pointing dog?

Any other thgoughts on fixing this? I am convinced that if I called him off a bird, he would come. No other bird dog I have ever had has been able to be called off.

Attention Deficit Pointing dog?

I have owned French Brits for over 30 years. I have had great success with them. They have great noses and are generally solid on point to the extent that you can stop and have lunch and they will stay on point. I now have 3 dogs, one is an intact male. Unlike any of them I have ever had, he is ALWA...

Re: HEAVY BRUSH LOCATE BY GPS OR BEEPER?

Wow...great replies......so I gather it takes a bit longer to locate your dog with the gps than an "on point" beeper.but I like the orange vest and taking a bearing. I see reading glasses were mentioned. I am of the age that I need them. My far vision is 20/20 but I need reading glasses. Many of the...

HEAVY BRUSH LOCATE BY GPS OR BEEPER?

I have 3 dogs and this year the areas I hunt are so dense that if a dog goes on point 20 yards away, I'm not likely to see him. There are times when the dog stayed on point for 15 minutes while I searched and searched eventually, the dog gave up and bumped the bird. Thus, I either need a beeper that...

Adding a Beeper to an E-collar?

I hunt in some dense stuff and when my dogs go on point, sometimes I can't find them. They wear a Dogtra E-Collar and I would like to add a beeper that stays quiet until the point occurs. Of course my dogs are little and adding this to an e-collar makes for a huge package. Does anyone make a VERY sm...

Re-visiting Tick repellents

Hi all I HATE TICKS!!! Just wanted to share some thoughts and get ideas from the members of this forum. There has been some discussion on the forums about the impening bad year for ticks. I agree. I live on Long Island and have been seeing LOTS of them. And there's loads of Lyme Disease here. I have...

Re: Ticks are going to be there this year

It looks like ticks are going to be bad in Jersey this year, I found ticks on doughnut for a week, it was cold and snowing when she had her weekend out in the woods so I start to put advantage on them already cc You convinced me when you said you found ticks on your doughnut. Think I would change p...

Re: Digging holes

This is an incidental post and I'm not recommending it, but thought it was interesting. I read William Koehler's books on dog training when I was younger. He was the man that did the animal training for all those classic Disney movies. He had a real extensive background in training all sorts of dog...

Was: Possibly deaf pup now "More questions than answers"

If you've been following this thread, I was of the opinion that my dog was deaf. You might have read that at 12 weeks he didn't show ANY reaction to a shotgun blast, didn't wake up with a clap a whistle or pots clanging. I have had LOTS of pups and have hunted over most. NEVER have I seen a hearing ...

Re: Young "Independant" pup w/no Pack Instinct?

I'm certainly not a trainer but your pup sounds a lot like my Ellie. She didn't really like being held as a young puppy either. She still prefers her bed on the floor to sitting with people on the sofa and she cares nothing about sleeping in the bed with me. However, she loves me being in the room ...

Re: Young "Independant" pup w/no Pack Instinct?

He has been on meds for ear mites since we got him. The vet has suggested we take him off the meds as sometimes one of the ingredients can cause temporary hearing loss. He will be examined next week and if he's still deaf after two week, we will be taking him to s specialist. Also, the ear mites alo...

Re: Young "Independant" pup w/no Pack Instinct?

Don, I completely understand and now I'm going to sound like a fool because I've been trying to see if he even hears me at all and it's looking to me like he's deaf. His reactions to food and stuff mirror the other dogs behavior and if he's sleeping and I clap my hands from a distance of 10-15feet h...

I understand and agree. I'm just asking about any "special" techniques (if any) in handling such a pup.

Thank you Don

Did you train her any differently than the other dogs? Was there anything special about what you did to appeal to that independent personality?

Re: Suggestions for Tick Repellant Products?

Preventic collar. Frontline alone didnt cut it for my dogs. I have some concerns about the oily topical repellants (killers) on the market that are absorbed through the skin. They repel ticks and kill them after they bite. When I questioned what benefit it would be to kill the tick AFTER the bite, ...

Re: How do you know when its time?

I made the decision when my dog did not want to get up. Many time we keep dogs alive too long because we can't bear the pain of the loss. Please keep foremost in your mind your responsibility to do the right thing for your dog without regard for yourself. ask yourself, "What am I putting this dog th...

Re: Disappointed..just lost out on a French Brit

Thank you all for your PM's and expressions of sympathy. Indeed losing 2 at the same time is quite painful. My wife caught me smelling the blanket next to the bed 2 weeks after she died to see if I could still smell her. Pretty embarrassing. Am I pathetic or what? I will consider fostering a gun dog...

Disappointed..just lost out on a French Brit

I was expecting a pup which I had ordered from an excellent and trustworthy breeder. Turns out the dam had a false pregnancy. This will slow down my recovery from losing two over the winter. I miss my dogs terribly. I'm having dreams about putting the last one down in Feb. So now I have to start my ...
