Topo Maps
Do you use "Topo" maps on your hunts? I still keep one tucked away inside my vest, sealed in vinyl. to orient myself grouse hunting in new areas, along with aerial maps. Just curious. Or have you found a better way (GPS), or are you still "old school" like me? Just curious.

Re: Llewellin Setter for Ruffed Grouse Hunting?
Funny you should ask that question. I am sitting here typing this reply with a 12 week Llewellin playing at my feet (when he's not sleeping there). She is out of Bob's Straight Creek stock (our second from there). I have had Llewellins about 10 years now. Prior to that I had a Gordon Setter from Ark...

Re: What's Your Favorite Bell?
I have used the medium & large cow bells. When running a second dog the small brass bell works well & gives off a different sound, with both working well on grouse. In wet snow conditions, they need to be cleared of snow every now and then. I have beeper collars also, but there is something nostalgi...

Along that line of stupid..... Last dove season a buddy, my grandson and I were dove hunting. I was using my 20 ga. over/under and my grandson wanted to use my 12ga. I use for turkey hunting, instead of his 20 pump. In Ohio you have to plug the gun so it only has a 3 shot capacity. After my GS shot ...

Try using the "chain gang" method with the dogs. They probably will have them at the event you are going to. Or make your own and use it. Your future walks on lead will be much smoother.

E-Shorthairs, We train a lot of Grouse dogs for actual Grouse hunting and we train the dogs in either mannner, some clients like their dogs to lock up and never move until they are released, others want their dogs to naturally relocate. Got to admit the naturally relocating dog has more Grouse shot...

You might try www.gundoghousedoor.com/easy_dog_kennel.htm.
They have a lot of good info for dog doors, drainage systems, plans, etc.
Farmtek.com has info on floor heating if you want to go that route. Gun Dog Supply has houses and kennel supplies also.

Burying instead of retreiving
Has any one had a dog that wants to bury the bird instead of retrieving it. And what can be done about it. The dog hunts hard, tracks, points, then wants to bury the bird. I'm thinking of selling her to a funeral home.

Re: How far can dogs scent?
On a grouse hunt in PA my Llewellin was really birdy along a skidder road, when he turned left and stood on his hind legs on the edge of the berm, stuck his nose high in the air and winded for about 15 seconds. He dropped down and worked down the hill in the clearcut about 50 yards and when on point...

Re: Whats the best way to teach 'load up'
My dogs have always "loaded up" by using the kennel command before going hunting. Most times they get in the dog box as soon as they see me load up the shotguns. Honest. After the hunt I load them up by hand to prevent any injuries from a tired dog getting hurt. A side note about the Bob Evans farm,...

Hunting Chaps Fraying
If you have hunting chaps or hunting pants that fray & tatter at the bottom from hunting grouse in the briers and thick stuff, an easy fix is to turn them up to the inside and use pop rivets to "Stitch" them. Much cheaper than new chaps.

If you are looking for a leather shell belt, Cabella's has them for about $40. "Grouse Tales" by Ken Szabo used to sell them, maybe still do. They are Amish made. I have the Amish made belts in 20 & 12 and love them. Takes the weight off the shoulders. I never hunt without them. I turn mine around w...

Re: What can you tell me about this Pedigree-Lewl???
I have had two Llewellin's out of the dames bloodline and they were awesome hunters, hard working, biddable, and had a natural pointing and retrieving ability about them. The breeders of these Llewellins' breed pretty much for the walking foot hunter and not for trialing so much. I just got a third ...

Re: Straw or Cedar Chips ?
I used to use straw for bedding as it was readily available for our horses until once when my Brittany got a really bad ear infection. The vet dug out a piece of straw that was embedded deep in her ear canal and began to fester. I now use cedar in the summer and pine chips in the winter months.

Re: Ice balls on paw hair
When grouse hunting in the snow I tend to move from cover to cover a lot. In addition to trimming foot hair, I find that a 12 volt to 120 volt converter with a conventional blow dryer works great once the dogs are back to the truck for getting rid of any ice balls. The dogs love it & it makes a grea...
Re: Racoon's
Shot a grouse once just before dark. My Brit was hunting "dead bird" when it pointed a rotted tree stump. Thinking my grouse had hidden in there I peered in the hole. From what you describe, I would go with a AM. Brittany. Usually close hunters, best I ever hunted with was kept in the home, but was awesome on grouse. And I own a couple Llewellin Setter's and am probably going to get another Britt in the spring.

Re: Grouse in southern App.
In the early 90's the lower grouse populations around Ohio were being blamed at least in part on parasites. I can see parasites causing problems in a localized area, but statewide? One reason for the decline among many, I believe is the increase in deer population and to a lesser degree turkey popul...

Re: Not Pointing Grouse
Having hunted Mr. Ruff for more years than I like to remember, I would suggest that if a dog that is not pointing grouse right away, don't sweat it. Give the dog about 400-500 encounters with the "king" and you will eventually have a good grouse dog if the drive and breeding is there. If you want a ...

The RIGHT dog for you will become the right dog for you no matter what breed you purchase. It all depends on the love you give it, the time you spend with it, the birds you get it into. Kind of like a child. I have hunted over and with maybe a dozen different breeds. Many good, some bad. The bad one...
