Another Passed On
Five weeks ago I buried my 15 year old male. Yesterday I had to have my 10 year old master hunter female put down. :( Nine months ago she had a stroke--she came out of it but was blind. That switched her from a part time house dog to a full time house dog. She wasn't in pain, her tail was always wag...

Re: GSP lost 7 pounds in year
If your dog runs as much as you say he does, I'd worry about twisted stomach if you load him up on feed in the morning before running him. just something to think about. It's always better to feed at night--that way they have time to digest the food and clear the stomach before running. PPP is 30/20...

Re: Poor Breeder Contact
I would look for a different breeder. He doesn't sound like his customers are a priority to him. I have bred Springers and then Brittanys for 25 years and I ALWAYS contacted people within 2 days (most times the same day) of their call or e-mail. There are too many good breeders out there with good d...

Lost another good one
I lost another good dog, Quick Shooter SH  I almost got 15 years out of him. He was a good co-pilot & a great hunting dog. Pheasants were his game and there weren't many better :!: He knew how to pin ND, SD, & NE. ringnecks. In the off season I played the AKC hunt tests games with him. He also ...

Re: Outside kennels, what would you do different
Pour your concrete pad about a foot bigger(on all sides) then your kennels-- that way you can run your lawn mower tires on the concrete -- keeping grass and weeds from growing up in the fence. Also have bottom bar of the kennel elevated about 2", so you can wash the waste out under the fence.

Welcome to the forum. Congrates on the new pup. Avoid getting around other people's pets and dogs until you get his 3rd puppy shot in him -- my guess at this time he only has 1 puppy shot in him at this time.. Take your time with him. Instead of a bumper, try a knotted up sock(make sure it is too bi...

English Setter Pups -- All Pups are SOLD
My hunting buddy has a litter of English Setter pups (born 12/12) for sale. 7F & 2M Litter will be registered AKC because owner hunt tests. Male is from Berg Bros lines. Female is Shadow Oaks Bo grand-daughter. Both parents are hunted on wild birds. Both are house dogs. If interested PM me for owner...

If no one else has said it yet I will... I'm very jealous of the amount of time you get to spend in the field! I think you log more field time in a week than I will in a month. It's fun reading about your progress with Tubbs. Best of luck as it continues. X2 My season starts this coming Saturday, b...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
If you start useing the e-collar when he starts to go in on the birds you will get a dog that blinks birds to avoid being shocked. He'll try to avoid birds so he doesn't get shocked. That's how you get a dog to avoid deer, snakes, etc. -- when they smell or see deer, snakes, etc, you crank the colla...

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds
SLOW DOWN -- you are trying to do too many things at once. You just got him to start finding birds & pointing them in the last 2 days --now you want him to be steady to wing, shot, & fall. You are going too fast, give him a chance to be a pup and figure it all out. I'll bet you just walked right pas...

If the wind is over 30mph, I won't hunt my dog in tall heavy cover without an Astro -- it's too hard for both you and the dog to keep track of each other in high wind. When the wind is high, I hunt shorter cover, so we both know where we are. The way you said the dog acted when he came back, he prob...

I feed after the hunt only -- I worry about the possibility of twisted stomach on morning feedings, so I don't fed in the mornings on days they will hunt. If dog is tired and not eating, try mixing warm water into food. still not eating, I put a little chicken broth in with the food (use the unsalte...

There is a NAVHDA club in Sioux Falls and they do a lot of training & have access to birds. You could probablly get them to do a couple fake shoot to retreive trials with an e-collar on. They train for AKC hunt test and about every other situation. They are a good bunch of people and enjoy helping p...

Re: What's next for my puppy?
Since you are going to mainly be hunting upland, you might want to switch to AKC pointing dog hunting tests. They are broken into 3 levels -- junior hunter, senior hunter, and master hunter. If you go to AKC's web site and google their search engine for qualifications for each level it will give you...
